What do people here know about Smythson?

They are having a huge sale it seems with some (possibly) nice items. Are they up to the level of Ettinger? They are certainly expensive, but it seems they don’t manufacture themselves (anymore), at least for some items, and source the stuff from Italy and Spain.

I have a small bag from them. Quite we'll done, picked it up on sale last year.

I've been a purchaser of their planners for many many years

I bought this wallet to replace my old Louis Vuitton in epi leather, that aged not so well (leather become matt because of sweat, some stitching broken):

From the German brand Sonnenleder.
Admittedly nothing spectacular but sober and solid, as it looks. I like to have a coin pocket. Also nice that no logo appears on the front.

Might give it a try then, something small as a test. I have some stuff from Ettinger and it’s awesome, wouldn’t really want anything less.

I've given up on Bellroy and their shitty zippers. This zipper lasted 3 years and I've been using it broken for a year. The zipper pull usually falls off a year earlier. So I went a bit upscale and a little bigger. Shinki natural cordovan leather from The Superior Labor in Okayama.

The Bellroy is 10.3 cm x 6.6 cm and this one is 11 cm x 8 cm, so it is 1.3 cm (0.5 inches) longer and wider. About the same thickness loaded. Still fits nicely as a front pocket wallet.

Even I've gone cashless these days, so I just use one of the Secrid (made in The Hague) card holders.
I've never carried cash in my wallet since I was a school boy. I still carry a roll or wad to mess with store clerks and to give to the grandkids.

why do you favor the zipper pouch or a standard card case type?

I haven’t found a money clip I like.

I prefer the zipper because I don’t like farm detritus like hay and straw getting inside my wallet. My pockets are always full of that shite slinging bales.

View attachment 20546 Nearly four years and still love it, but I am carrying three fewer cards these days and now the fit is a bit sloppy. Before I handed in my two purchase cards it was perfect - continued to stretch as my number of cards expanded. I know I got it off Etsy but can't recall the seller.

After seven years I replaced in with another One Star front pocket wallet. I’m going to try to keep it to 7 cards and not stretch beyond that.

Nearly two years in and wallet number two is holding steady at 8 cards. The natural colour had darkened quite a bit, though I don’t carry it that often now that everything is digital.

I have switched my leather goods from Castelijn & Beerens of The Netherlands to Smith and Canova of the UK. I have no idea where they manufacture but I currently own two weekend bags, a belt and a wallet.
