All About Watches

are you kidding me. is there anything in life foo is not an expert?

fwiw, according to him his first real watch was an IWC big pilot. he sold it to fund his wedding. the rest is history ...

His is different - flatter bezel IIRC.
Funny how now he’s bought a (name brand, overpriced) watch he’s overnight become an expert in watches.

I think he’s recently got himself a 911 so of course has overnight become an expert on cars!

IWC Newb question:

There’s a nice XV that looks like this:

And a not so nice face like this:

What are their names? How do I clarify that I’m not interested in the bottom one?

Yes, Foo is busy telling everyone in the car thread over on SF that his car is the best, while the new NSX and other cars can't compare. He's exactly the same in every thread - his opinions are the right ones, and his possessions are the best ones.

Bullshit. His rich wife's parents funded his wedding.

doghouse doghouse

what's wrong with you you stupid motherfucker?

on both forums: ask andy and styfo foo told everyone that he has to sell his watch to fund his life incl. rubinacci orders, wedding, university etc. later on he had to reveal that his future wife is bloody rich.

just in case you missed this part in foo's story, just shut the fuck up, you bloody asshole.

I really can't remember a guy, who is more tiresome than you, good lord.

so if he later revealed that his wife is rich, what do you think is the more likely scenario - that he funded a new york wedding via a watch sale or that her parents paid for everything?

Saw one of the Seiko Astron 5X SBXC001 in a Seiko watch display at the weekend, but in a burgundy rather than the blue. With the smaller size of 42mm the Astron srange is moving in the right direction. It looked surprisingly good in the flesh, much better than photos on the internet. I've only ever seen Americans in airports wearing Astrons, I've never seen anyone wearing one here in the Netherlands, or any other European country, including the UK. They're widely available here, so someone must be buying them:

That watch looks both interesting and weird to me.
Chronograph pushers But no chronograph.
GMT bezel but I don’t see a GMT hand
Second time zone display?
How much sauce do you have to put away to wake up and need to look at your watch to know what day it is and whether it’s AM or PM?
What does the ‘GPS’ signify? Will the watch show me how to get home after said overimbibement?

The issue with the Astron range has been one of aesthetics: super-large sizes e.g. some of the saphire domed watches had 50mm cases and busy dials on account of satellite and other functions. Over the last two years they've come out with some less cluttered dials with the SSE161J1 which was a definite move in the right direction:

With the latest incarnation and with new models coming this February, I definitely could be in the market for one.

Here's a review of the world timer:

Interesting but I still don’t understand having the time zones around the bezel if there’s no GMT hand.
Decent looking watch. Some functions as I stated are pointless (Am Pm) but lots of tech in there and it sorta puts to shame anyone getting an explorer or GMT starting at at least twice the price.

I was talking to a watch dealer a couple of years ago and IIRC he was saying Citizen had some similar satellite tech in some of their watches that he was a big fan of. Wonder if the big Swiss makers like Rolex et al will ever adapt to this or remain purveyors of purely vintage technology.

If he sold his ugly oversized IWC to fund his wedding to a loaded bish then that’s what I call a good ‘investment piece’.

With those bezels, I think you're meant to work out the time by the plus or minus in a given time zone yourself.

Citizen have been less successful than Seiko in distinguishing themselves as anything other than a cheap watch brand in Europe. Their satellite watches are less expensive than Seiko and have some unique designs:

The launch of the above F900 chronograph was preceded by an ad campaign, but some of the versions with different colour hands didn't make it into production for the market. So I didn't take the plunge, but I was interested at the time of the ads.

I like this current Satellite Wave which you can pick-up for just under Euros 800 in the Netherlands:

One of the problems I guess is that the GPS satellites are already old technology, what with the arrival of Galileo satellites.

Citizen also make the excellent Chronomaster and the wafer watch the Eco-Drive One.

Sad Dick Khan the mayor of Londonistan has a Tag Heuer and is getting stick. It’s too much for a socialist to be seen wearing.

https://order-order.com/2019/01/24/sadiq-watch-watch-special/

What I've noticed with a lot of Brit MPs is that they sport indistinct watch brands with white faces that it is impossible to distinguish watch brand and cost from a flash of the wrist on television. I think this is deliberate. They may be wearing a ten grand Patek Phillippe Calatrava or Frederique Constant for well under a grand.

As for Khan, one may sell one soul's for an 18K gold Rolex Day-Date President....but for a Tag Heuer F1 Calibre 5?!

I don’t like skeleton hands. My G Shock has skeleton hands and the hour hand is a different colour to the minute hand. Terrible. Thick hands with plenty of lume is best for easy reading.

I am not keen on busy dials with lots of small figures and unnecessary functions.

Is there a solar watch, with radio control timing, that has a nice understated face (a good leather strap would be a bonus) ? In other words a maintenance-free, respectable looking dress watch.

Absolutely. I can never understand why Omega puts skeleton hands on pretty much all of its modern Seamaster models. Not only are they unattractive but, as you say, they are less practical.

On an unrelated note, I had lunch yesterday with an old friend who purchased a Patek Nautilus 5711 about six years ago. He paid about AUD$30,000 for it, when the Australian dollar was riding fairly high. Although it was expensive, he bought it as a present to himself because he finished his period as a registrar and became a fully-fledged doctor.

He was on holiday in the US recently and was looking at watches and saw multiple examples of the same model of watch, on sale for USD$60,000. That's over AUD$80,000 - an increase of $50k in six years.

If that doesn't sound like a ridiculous bubble, then I don't know what does.

I have followed his antics from time to time. He is a real homo novus in my view.

In fact - I feel somewhat embarrassed for him. he is probably a quite intelligent a nice fellow. It might suit him a bit better if he would let his hair down once in a while. Trying to tick all the "rich people" boxes (which not necessarily correlate with "upper middle class", which he seems to be aspiring to, makes him look very much like trying too hard.

I don't think that the Foo is capable of letting his hair down. I remember that, in a thread about his wedding, he was explaining to people that he was physically unable to smile, which is why the wedding photos never showed him smiling.

So many undertones at weddings, not a big fan of the ritual myself. I would have hated a big wedding, especially if I had to have one due to pressue from family(ies).

Found this in Instagram https://www.wmtwatches.com/ Really tempted to buy. I did a google search and found only a 2 pages thread in a forum dismissing the brand because the factory makes copies for Rolex,.....

Quite like the models with the antiqued dial

Wtf? You’d pay money for that? Looks like it’s lived up someone’s arse for 30 years, then put through the spin cycle to wash the shit off.
