All Things Sock-Related

This thread is for any and all discussion related to socks.

I'll start out with basic stuff. I like wool. Cotton absorbs but doesn't wick. Wool also retains dyes and shape better, in my experience. Over the calf height is best because they tend to actually stay up instead of sliding down, and it keeps the calf from being exposed. Call me nuts, but an OTC sock makes a difference against a chilly wind.

Some socks are flat knit, some completely ribbed and some have spaced ribs. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can elaborate. I find the flat to be less elastic, to breathe less well, and to be more on the formal side. The full rib seems more casual.

Wool socks cannot be machine dried, generally. This is a minor nuisance, but I find it worth it. Finer socks require hand washing, and I have no time for that.

The stock colors at a boring department store, at best , will be black, navy, gray, and maybe brown. The safe bet is to match socks to trousers for color, but black socks for black shoes is inoffensive to me. More interesting colors like dark green and burgundy are more spirited and add interest. Lighter blues can sometimes be used, and some will even go with violet shades.

Patterns include argyle, houndstooth, herringbone, and both vertical and horizontal stripes. Argyle seems sporty to me, but some people seem to think they are appropriate with suits. Same for horizontal stripes. Herringbone and houndstooth are more suitable for business, and generally come in small scale patterns with dark, subdued colors. There are other patterns, or designs, but they border on the novelty end and are off my radar.

Next!

I've been experimenting with socks for a while, and found out as you say that dark green and burgundy are the ones I would like to have more. Love the contrast they achieve with all type of trousers. Sometimes I like to use purple socks. Also I have the basics, navy and grey.

I am wearing Byford wool argyles today. Nice thick construction, sized well for my smaller feet, and they stay up. Oddly the solid Byflex socks are a bit large on me, in the same way that the Nordstrom house brand OTC wool socks are.

Nordstrom OTC wool is a very comparable value to Byford. They seem a bit less durable, but the cost is less as well. Both have that sweet spot of substance without excessive bulkiness.

For 'fun' socks, I had a few pair of Paul Frederick's Peruvian cotton things from years back that have held up well despite being fairly thin. They still have many interesting patterns.

Has anyone at SF sampled Viccel's new heavyweight merino socks?

I'm all for Nagrani's, but those Frederick's socks are fucking horrendous.

That picture would have stopped the practice cold. no one likes vagina-sock dentata

I have just learned of the existence of linen socks. I will need to learn more about this. Does anybody know jack about linen socks?
Availabilty from Kent Wang is all I know thus far, and presumably they are cool.

I've seen them in the low end market before. Certainly never tried on a $25 pair. And, yes, they are cool. But, they do sweat more given to their more porous makeup. So if you have sweaty feet, this might be a non-starter.

Really? That's where I'd prefer to start with any experiment. Any leads
would be appreciated.

Regarding socks. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here, but a few weeks ago I bought my first pair of cotton socks in a while, and I was immediately struck by how vastly inferior they are to wool socks. Where wool socks breathe and wick away moisture, cotton socks quickly turn into a soggy, blister-inducing mess. Never again!
I have a few old cotton pair in my drawer, and some were put into service for color reasons lately. Same dissatisfaction here. Wool is just there and not on your mind whereas cotton becomes this loose, damp, paper-thin mess that annoys all day. I can't believe that I used to live with that, and that others still do.

Spanish markets and clothiers. Mostly a tropical weather thing in local ethnic markets. As for you obtaining them, do a search for linen socks. You'll find they're rather popular with the hippies. Some foreign brands on eBay too.

My workplace has this demographic, so I just may be in luck. I notice that the ebay stuff seems to be largely Russian.
Give it a try. Honestly, for a 100% variety, I think trying to find a hippie version of 100% hemp linen might be your easiest bet.

Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of cotton blends. The $34 Bresciani stuff is a nonstarter.
Given my hatred of most white athletic socks, that might be the slot linen fills.

While we're on the topic of wool socks. Has anyone come across truly paper-thin wool socks, suitable for the stickiest days of summer? I find that most wool socks get a little sweaty when the mercury starts to rise.
Even in a merino, are you ever going to get breatheability like a cotton or a linen?

For casual wear, I wish I could find some ragg wool socks that were not super bulky.
In general, I'm fond of a heathery color variegation.

Ragg wool?
Oh, you're in Miami. This hippy-hiking type of thing. I think it's supposed to be made of recycled wool or something, but it looks like this

sometimes available in other colors, but the light gray is quintessential

Since I was guessing, I looked it up.

ragg (ræg)
n.
1. a sturdy wool fiber treated so as to retain the natural oils.
2. a flecked, grayish yarn made from this, usu. blended with nylon.
3. a garment made from this yarn.
[1975–80; probably < Scandinavian; compare Norwegian ragg(e)sokk, Swedish raggsocka heavy sock of coarse wool]

unmasculine thread. I only wear same shoe colour scottish thread socks. navy on black shoes, burgundy or brown.

It's a dandy thread! I wore boring brown herringbones today, but I'm shocked to hear an Italian espousing the prosaic "match socks to shoes" advice.

Just for that, I'm going to advocate white wool athletic socks for wear with sneakers. Yes, they still exist.

Dandy what a disgusting histrionic antimasculine hype.

My role models are Nixon, Reagan, bronson, Eastwood or Heston.

I can't imagine them wearing ridiculous pink bullfighter socks.

Be macho my friend.
