Those power slides on bias ply tires... fantastic footage. My favorite bit was watching him drive up in a merc... would never happen today.

The way it drops and gains speed

Ya, that blip and hesitation between gears is missing today. Somehow it introduces drama. Man, the speed he carries thru that spoon curve is mega. What a driver. Happy to say I say him race 2 times before untimely Imola.

Not only that, but it also adds more to the 'human error' there is no way a pilot today can make a mistake between shifting gears. Also traction control and so on, not only help the driver, but its more like the car is driving itself rather than the pilot driving it. I cannot contain myself from quoting him, but Juha Kankunnen said once that WRC is for boys and group B was for men. Same thing can be said for Formula 1 before 1997 or so and nowadays. Anybody can drive a F1 car as long as they can keep up with the speed and the G forces. Before, it was much more than that. Also those cars were almost impossible to drive because they had no downforce, no traction control, and a shitload of power. You were very lucky to get to see the man drive.

Indeed. I was intending to inflect that in my comment. The drama comes from the risk they take gear to gear, where today the press a button and a computer takes over.

Yes, anyone can drive an F1 car now, as a 17 year old is proving. He's talented, but he's exactly why it's too easy. It's a heavier and faster kart. That dutch kid could never manage that McLaren Senna drove. No fucking way.

Part of what the F1 engineers focus on now is making the car as easy as possible to drive, it reduces laptime, and you cant fault them. In the Senna era, they cared about the most powerful car they could produce and leave it to the driver to do the rest. It was the active suspension Williams that changed things forever.
