Marriage is only the formal legal recognition of the relationship and it’s handy shorthand for a few things in life. But the relationship / partnership/ companionship is what it’s about.

The obvious one is to marry from good genetic stock. Marrying heiresses looks good on paper, but not in reality. Too much family baggage to conform with and you'll be limited in being able to cut your own swathe through the forest and being able to declare yourself as a self made man. These things count later, but probably not as much as I or you would like.
