Australian tailors, shirtmakers and shoemakers - the secret makers

What does your tailor think of him?

My tailor doesn't say too much about him, but l do know many of Charles' clients now go to my tailor. There were three really great tailors in my city, and one retired 10 years ago, with Charles soon to retire I suspect as he is aged 87. Charles is a wonderful bloke and l think l might get a coat made form him soon. Can he do the collars like my tailor? No. Can he make a coat for a body like mine with uneven shoulders and twisted arms??...that is why l hesitate. Can he made a horrible looking body like mine look good??

None of the forum people use any of these tailors, with one or two exceptions with past members. Few know what they do, but some in the know do. Anyway.....word is quiet, because who do you go around telling?...who wants to listen? No-one cares about clothes these days, but the clients do, but they generally don't go around talking about it.

My tailor thought well of Frank Marino who used to make suits for the elites in Toorak and charged really high prices, he also thought well of Bijan who recently retired in Sydney (knew l should have ordered a coat from him), and never said much about Charles so he probably thought he was quite decent. He thinks very highly of a certain bespoke tailor in Italy (forgotten his name).

We have good tailors in Australia, but few online know about them.

Local shoemaker Brendan Dwyer makes a bespoke handmade shoe. He rarely makes anything like this, and it is good to see his work. Of course Brendan has limited training and is a rough maker, but good to see it here.

Like with many custom shoemakers in Melbourne Australia, most have limited success, and none can make a living making proper handmade shoes. They all start off wanting to make handmade bespoke but reality bites them and they end up making shoes for theatre companies etc like Brendan does.

My old mate Theo is a cheeky lad too. He does handmade shoes and has limited training, yet he charges $4,500 upwards for bespoke handmade. It is not even a regular gig with him. He used to make shoos, reality bit him, then he started making bags because it was easier and better money.

All these kids want to charge big bucks, but it takes years of hard work to be good enough to charge the top dollars.

fxh fxh did you know about Masons in Melbourne? They sold lots of highend fashion for 6 years, and they sold George Cleverley shoos. Recently closed down. Never knew about them.

Wish l had bought this pair

Some lovely shoes. You have redeemed yourself Shooey after posting those square -toed skin-head friendly monstrosities.
