I received an invitation to a "black tie optional" benefit for October 8th at a country club in Scarsdale NY. My guess is at least 50% of the guests will be in black tie. I do own a full black tie rig less the formal shirt with studs, which I would rectify prior. I guess my first question is whom else on the board owns a tuxedo or smoking jacket and how often do you wear it?

In addition to a "proper" tuxdeo I also own this:

Helpful, thanks. Let's start with a question. Do you own a tuxedo/dinner jacket?

He seems swell actually. Thought I'd question why a guy who claims that he has clothes made form him doesn't have a dinner jacket

He's the bee's knees. Just really into that whole brevity thing.

I don't have one either and don't expect ever to acquire one.

Yes, I've actually had one since junior high (not the same one obviously) from playing in orchestra. Then I was a craps/blackjack dealer in my early 20's, so I was one of the few people that had the need pretty much constantly from a young age.

I can count on one hand how many times I've needed it in the past few years though, generally an opening night opera or something. Last time I wore it was a couple years ago on the QM2 for the Captain's Ball. I have considered a new one as I want midnight blue one of these days, and possibly a white jacket.

If you are going to a black tie optional event and 50% have DJ's on, I will be legitimately impressed

This is my experience in and around NYC at black tie optional events.

He doesn't appreciate the Canadian hoe down y'all like to partake in.

I even avoid the hoedowns. Until I get elected to some elite fraternal or professional organization that requires black tie for investiture I am fine without. I don't do fundraisers. I was the guy in the jungle using the TuxedoCash™

Thruth Thruth do you have any items of clothing you reserve for special occassions? The title is not just about formal wear.

Nothing reserved only for special occasions. Any of my dark suits with a white shirt, a sedate tie and a white linen PS. Black footwear. Usually a DB simply because it is so rare to see one around here.

I am thinking of buying blackwatch trousers for holiday parties to pair with a blazer, etc.

no to the eye cancer. but i'm fucked if I can figure out what that is. fxh fxh you don't like it, the blackwatch?

I know who he is. I'm not looking to drape myself in the shit. One nice pair of trousers. And not all blackwatch is created equal.

For a holiday party I think blackwatch trousers, blazer and blue bowtie could be a fun look.

Thruth Thruth I also like a db for parties. This also, with a bowtie to further differentiate from businesswear.

^^ I too have a blackwatch shirt. I don't shovel shit in it ( I do not own a shovel, but I do own a cat shit scooper) but it is what is referred as a beater.

i got a midnight blue shawl lapel dinner suit
wearing it maybe 2x/year

thinking about getting a DB dinner suit too

i love to wear it with my gucci bit loafers

Would you double the amount of times you wear it or wear each one just once per year?
