Boxing & UFC

Did any of you watch the "grudge match" in Dubai yesterday between rival strongmen Eddie Hall and Hafthor Bjornsson? It was a better fight than many had predicted. The Icelander gave the Englishman a pretty good boxing lesson. If Hall had paid more attention to learning the fundamentals, he might have prevailed.

I saw highlights. Tbf It was a mess.

Hopefully the 'beef' btw both men is finally squashed.

Jake Paul and a UFC guy in the boxing ring. What happened to boxing where promoters will put two random amateurs into a ring and call it a boxing event?

Tommy Fury beats Jake Paul.

"The WBC had said the winner will now get a top-40 ranking with the sanctioning body which, in theory, could pave the way for a future world-title shot."

...beating a YouTube star gets you a shot at a world title.

I'm a HUGE boxing fan and have gone to countless fights. I know no-one who watched that fight.

I originally misread Tommy Fury as Tyson Fury thinking it was another Pacman type retirement tour.

Tyson was there. Cristiano Ronaldo took a breather from his training and I guess anyone who didn't have issues with Saudis and general degradation of women.

I thought Tyson Fury retired. Now he's fighting a UFC guy in Riyadh again. Those sweet sweet Saudi riyals.

^^^ He didn't. And his opponent is not a UFC guy; he is a PFL guy! Well, he was a UFC heavyweight champ!

UK’s Tyson Fury will fight Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk in Riyadh in 2024.

I hope he's in better shape this time around.

The YouTube guy will fight anyone these days? Mike Tyson is knocking on the door of becoming a senior citizen.

you should watch the Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr. exhibition a couple of years ago. listen to his punches. Listen to RJJ talk about the pain and look for excuses to not have an exhibition rematch. Jones had not fought in 3 yrs, with a14 years for Tyson in 14. Paul's only loss is to Tommy Fury, who is actually but barely a boxer. 7 years to senior citizenship for Tyson. That's being on the verge?

I don't doubt people can land punches and project strength with the right training and diet in their 50s. But I do seriously doubt if they have a slip or their reflexes slow down and they inadvertently take a shot to the head that they have the ability to recover from a concussion injury at that age. (past injuries probably compound the problem). It doesn't seem like it's worth the risk unless you need money like Snoop Dogg.

Well in China it's closer.

Usyk with a narrow split decision over Fury. Undisputed heavyweight champion. Automatic rematch. I love boxing.

it was. they boxed and it was tight. it could have been a draw or have gone to Fury just as easily.
I read a few things online that said Fury was boxing like he thought he was going to win and seemed to take his foot off the gas in the last few rounds. Would you agree with that assessment?

throughout it seemed he would not want to commit inside when he stung Usyk. I think he was protecting against the knockdown. I don't think he was holding back

was that only after the knockdown in the 9th round or prior to that as well?

yup, it was. Usyk rocked him early. Won the first two rounds, maybe the third too. then Fury picked up. Jab was working, and so were shots to the body. the knockdown was surprising. fury got it together and won rounds after that. A close fight. the knockdown obviously carried enough weight to get Usyk a close split. 115-113 and 114-113 for him and 114-113 for Fury.

Interesting. How would you have scored it?

I gave usyk the first 3 rounds. Fury the 4th and I gave him 5 to 7 too. 8 to usyk, then a big 9th to him. then 2 to usyk and 1 fury to end it. I did not give each round a score. I said to myself that Usyk won but it might be a draw.

We’ll figure that general line of thinking + only knockdown lead to the outcome.

Netflix reminded me they have Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson live next month at 5pm PST Texas.

I am glad the sports I watch aren't the only ones bending over to broadcast/streaming time slot requirements.

"There’s 27-year-old Jake Paul, the YouTube star turned prizefighter with a 10-1 pro record, 26.9 million Instagram followers and a desire to prove his boxing bona fides. And there’s 58-year-old Mike Tyson, the former heavyweight champion. Most of the knockouts on his highlight reel date to the late 1980s, but he brings a brand name, along with the possibility that he might expose Paul as an arrogant fraud.

The streaming service, along with Most Valuable Promotions, the boxing company Paul runs alongside business partner Nakisa Bidarian, have set audacious viewership goals. They think Tyson-Paul can become the most streamed live sports event in history"

And this can be the most streamed "boxing" because.. It's one social media guy versus a retired ex con boxer? Isn't this like saying here is the most streamed F1 race with some guy who drove go karts at the arcades and a retired F1 driver.

“'Everyone on this undercard is getting paid way more than they normally would,' said Niagara Falls native Lucas Bahdi, who, along with Melinda Watpool, is one of two Canadians on Friday’s card. 'They’re getting 10 times, maybe more, the exposure they normally would.'"

They even have under cards.

"Friday is not a working day in Saudi and as such the weigh-in – held at a garden-themed theme park - was slightly better attended than other fight week events.

The distant screams from a rollercoaster were drowned out by some travelling British fans chanting 'there's only one Tyson Fury' .

They were joined by a couple of hundred Saudis, most of whom happened to be visiting the theme park. Blockbuster boxing shows in the Kingdom have been criticised for their low attendance. While it takes time to cultivate new boxing fans, local interest in this bout does not appear to be growing at the quickest of rates.

Usyk v Fury could sell out any stadium in the United Kingdom, but the fighters benefit from fighting in the Middle East because of the investment of the energy-rich Saudi organisers"

Screaming Saudi children on rollercoasters in the background. Very apropro. British tourists in the kingdom... Why? There's no alcohol. And don't worry, Cristiano will be in attendance.
