Building the DW Community

While there is some truth in what you say, DW is not a troll forum. Is there poking fun at SF/AAAC? Yes. Does there need to be more content and substance with respect to discussing dressing well? Yes. Can it be done without referencing other fora? Maybe, but the content, namely pictures to support any discussion of substance on dressing well have to come from elsewhere on the net. Thus, examples to support one's viewpoint may indeed include fits posted on SF, AAAC and elsewhere.

Avoiding all "talking shit" about people on SF or other fora would negate discussions of shills and wayward AV's. I know this is skewing my argument to suit my needs but the overarching point is that generally, the shit talking is focussed on people who contribute little to any substantial discussions on dressing well. Should I spend my time crafting and supporting threads that support the increased discussion of those things that have been pointed out? Most probably yes.

But I'll be damned if I can't have a bit of fun.

If I'm not mistaken, Gianni is the wayward AV. If we remove all talk of Gianni from DW, there is still a lot of references to others from SF, AAAC, etc. That's also a pretty weak way to justify the shit talking. The shit talking goes a lot further than calling people out who don't contribute to dressing well. A lot of the negative posts are here just to make fun of people. Like I said, I posted negative things about IS, which had nothing to do with anything related to dressing well. It was in complete poor taste. Justifying your unwarranted internet shit talking on the basis of dressing well, then ending it with "I'll be damned if I can't have a bit of fun" negates the validity of your argument.

Not that this makes our case as wonderful human beings, but outside of Stitches, there really hasn't been much of anything said about people that would constitute "shit talking". The bullshit with Don started after he was being an asshole and I take full responsibility for that. Honestly, I'm struggling to come up with another person who could possibly feel maligned here. Then again, I'm not as sensitive as most. Almost everyone has backed down from the Stitches posting hate for the betterment of the forum vibe.

Plus Drew and teh ToJ saga.

Anyway, Stiches is an annoying fucker, and anyone who is annoyed by him is free to say so. He doesn't have to fall under some sartorial code to be fair game.

Beyond one or two "colorful" characters, I'm also unaware of anything personal or derogatory going on at a noteworthy scale. As this thread points out, when you present your image on the internet, you become fair game for criticism. Mostly, the style choices are criticized.
I welcome the critique and wish you would steer with your postings. In a smaller forum, you individual input counts more.

throw in TOJ too as a more recent wayward AV. but as i said, and you have reiterated, i am taking license to support my position. i am not soley justifying my "unwarranted internet shit talking" on the basis or dressing well; i am wont to shit talk in an unwarranted, incoherent and inappropriate manner about humans, animals, inanimate objects and religious deities. won't deny it. but it is not all that i do (at least i think that). if the validity of my argument is negated by my last statement, so be it. the third sentence back either supports this hypothesis or doesn't.

So, where does this get us to now in terms of it is necessary to cultivate a homegrown DW catalogue of fits?

doghouse doghouse you never answered my question about moderation.

Oh, sorry.

As I said in some other thread, I think it's generally good. Just every now and then we get some interesting digression tamped down becuase it's off topic.

Message boards aren't wiki's, they are fluid conversations, like you would have at a bar.

On the whole, top job though.

I think everyone who has ever posted to an Internet forum has had negative things to say about Stitch.

I don't think I'll post any fits until I reach my goal weight again (gained about 18 pounds lately). Everything I have fits like utter crap. No other reason, really.
I gained 15 a few months back and my jackets actually fit properly for a few glorious summer months when it was too hot to wear them. So Doom.

Sorry, I kind of took the 'to post fit pics or not' to mean 'to post more on the forum or not' and that's where my sentiments are coming from. I'm just saying that the negativity that is on here may be the reason there are not more people signing up and being active on this forum. You can say it's your right, you want to have fun, and that some people are just so annoying that it's warranted but in the end but I think it repels more than it attracts people.

It's a fair critique. And I've tried to steer away from the Stitch attacks to better appeal to the masses.

Well, I think the King of Dhaka thread is probably representative of what happens when we don't have that baggage affecting our judgement. But it is just one thread.

Why did JrMouse leave?
I abducted him - he's languishing in a basement on Doom Isle. I feel kind of bad about it: Mouse is so tall I mistook him for Reed Richards and used the old "Does this pocket square smell like Rohypnol?" trick. I didn't notice my mistake until later but by then it was too late to just set him free, so there he stays.

And as I have stated, I think the people repelled by the banter here are people I'd rather not associate with either in i-form or actual life. If one takes themselves that seriously they can't have a laugh at themselves, then I have little use for them. Stitches is a test case for this.

But I'm just one voice here, others obviously have different opinions.

Short version - he treated me like a cunt. I called him on it. He wasn't happy about it and told me to go fuck myself and take my "shitty forum that no one uses anyway" and shove it.

Who is Mouse? I don't know all these SFers.

To the first point, we unfortunately have to cater to a wider audience. Sadly, most do not share your proclivities.

Mouse is Jr Mouse.

Still not sure who Jr Mouse is. He posted here?

If I can't hang out here and say "I think that guy Stitches sucks" like we are chilling at the pub knocking bag some beer, then my posts will probably dramatically decrease and/or stop.

Of course you can say that. It's more when EVERYONE is saying that, over and over and over again (no matter how true it may be) that outsiders could look at it as being overbearing.

Mouse posts on SF.

I agree. Clearly the making fun of snitches thing is negatively affecting forum participation. Just by alienating him from contributing here we're robbing Dressed Well of about 30,000 inane posts per day.

Gotcha.

I'm way out of the loop with the various SF denizens.

Apple is amazing and can do nothing wrong.

Marvel makes wonderful films.

I don't understand women.

There, I summed him up for you.

This made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that.

Lets get clear here.

With snitchy we aren't talking about some suburban mother who is overweight and posted a pic of her personal facebook page with a few relatives and friend as intended audience and who has been published on People of Walmart and made fun of. Nor are we talking about a high school teenager who posted a pic of themselves on a local sports team forum and is having others laugh at their skinny legs. Or a teenage girl photographed drunk and a party and pics sent around.

We are talking a serious public figure here. One who has 65,000 - yes Sixty Five Thousand posts on an international clothing forum. Along with regular picture of clothes and the family on holidays. One who regularly posts lists of brand names of clothing worn. One who rushes to post photographs of the latest acquisition of, say a heavy hunting cold weather jacket, worn in the suburbs. One who wears suits to a workplace were others wear chinos and fleece jackets. One who is a moderator of ALL of the significant threads on the clothing forum. A heavy handed moderator not a light handed benevolent anarchist. One who never hesitates to offer advice to all and sundry on clothing. One who has no sense of history of mens clothing.

If there was ever a symbol of all that is wrong with SF as well as a significant contributor to the decline then it is snitchy.

He is a public figure by choice, just like a reality TV program participant or a stand up comedian or a politician - except his reach is global, not just one city, one state or even one nation.

Making fun of him is not only appropriate but almost the public duty of anyone who cares.

Or doesn't care.

Ah. So not a big loss is what you're sayin.

 This would make sense if it were coming from Rambo, it being HIS forum and all.

To me, IS is just an easy picking. If anyone recalls, there was/is a dumb thread in SF dedicated to IS hate, which I am sure it has been removed at this point.

I was a frequent SF poster until the format change and IS started posting in every thread. It was just simply annoying because 90% of his posts were pointless. The content quality quickly declined and that drove many away. I think the quality of a forum matters just as much if not more than the amount of registered members it has, SZ being a perfect example of that.

The point I was trying to make is that I think to bring more users and substance to DW is to tone down the negativity. You can build a sense of community without that. Just my opinion. I think it's shitty for a user of a forum to say their banter is repelling people and you're happy about it since you don't have to interact with them.

Anyways, I'll leave this topic alone because it seems like the community of people that post here the most don't agree with my POV of how to increase traffic on DW.

You make a valid point. There is no productivity nor attraction if the overall tone is negative. I think maybe the banter could be somewhat neutral.

Stitches got really offended at me for commenting on his baggy burgundy jeans, and even after I had given him links to better options. I think most people learned to stop giving him advice on his SWD fits.

Link is needed for posts like this.

This is a bit of a double edged sword, because without more users, its hard to bring down the negativity. If no one comes along to add more positive voices the people who are here are going to keep up their ways. While those aren't bad, it'll be hard to shift the tone substantially.
Anyways, I'll leave this topic alone because it seems like the community of people that post here the most don't agree with my POV of how to increase traffic on DW.
Please don't. I find it not only interesting, but healthy. This forum needs more people on it to get a better balance. Its filled with great people already, but they tend to all be of the same viewpoints, and that can lead to stilted discussions.
You make a valid point. There is no productivity nor attraction if the overall tone is negative. I think maybe the banter could be somewhat neutral.
He does, and I think that definitely could be something we can work on.
 This would make sense if it were coming from Rambo, it being HIS forum and all.
Sorry, but I found this a little irritating. First, while I am the owner and operator, this isn't MY forum. The people here most definitely do not reflect my views and interests (save for the strong dislike of Stitches). I am not seeking to create a haven solely for like minded people. All I want to do, and have ever wanted to do, is give people a great alternative to SF. After I got so fed up with the place that I really couldn't take it any more I realized that I had nowhere else to talk to people on the internet. And as Doghouse stated, a forum is nothing without its members. Its like bragging that you're the owner of a cruise ship with no people on it. I've literally tried to bend over backwards to make as many people as possible happy, and I'll be the first to tell you, its really not easy to do.
A forum is only the people who post there and Rambo has gone out of his way to stress community here.
Thank you for that. I'm glad someone notices this shit.
