Collections and Checklists

Do you "collect" clothing or shoes? The weird online clothing enthusiast forum world constantly refers to "collections" and this strikes me as very odd.
Are they curating museums? Are these on public display? Why collect modern clothing that any fool can order online?
There is also this bizarre obsession with checklists of "must-have" items, which the ignorant, unaware of what they actually want or need, are always seeking in order to fulfill their consumptive desire while earning approval of online nerds.

I really find that I can assess my own wardrobe and notice redundancies and deficiencies without polling the anonymous flakes. I don't consider my closet to be some curio cabinet, despite having carefully chosen the items in it.

Am I wrong in thinking this notion of collecting is bizarre and the checklist to be a futile goose chase for the undiscerning and unimaginative?

I have a hard time discerning between whether I collect or actually purchase things for use, sometimes. It's a fine line, tbh.

I buy nothing I don't plan on wearing till it falls apart. If I do, it gets sold or given away rapidly.

Speaking of which, there are some classifieds yall should look at. If you don't wanna pay just tell me an I will give it to you.

To be fair, you have a point. There are showpiece items that are bought knowing full well they will see limited use and really bring more private joy than public wear. I don't do it intentionally, but there are items I have that I really, really like that I spend more time grinning at when I see them in the closet than the minimal wear they actually receive. This is miscalculation and poor initial planning. I get the sense that many igents reach this outcome on purpose.

I do collect some things.

I used to collect rock n roll "hits" that were on 78"s. Sold them.

I used to collect different versions of "Louie Louie" - I have a CD or so of 24 hours of different Louie Louie versions form the radio station in USA that does (or used to do) a Louie Louie day.

I used to collect /swap non commercial bootlegs (CDs, .flac files etc) of live concerts, studio outtakes, radio broadcasts, rare stuff etc. I still have a vast collection of bootlegs.

I collect some out of print books on stuff I'm interested in - music /culture/clothes.

I have a small collection of clothes/shoes I call my "archives". I never wear them - some are unwearable - but they are examples of a particular style or era - mostly Madison Ave/ Ivy that either aren't available in Oz or aren't made anymore. For example I have a beautiful herringbone perfect colour mid /light grey Brooks No 1 suit, no darts, natural shoulder etc. Looks great except for moth oles making it unwearable.

So?

is it that clothing is often associated with the word collection? A designer's/brand's Spring/Summer Collection, AW 2015 Collection. I've not noticed the use of collection by individuals on menswear fora but then again i haven't been looking for it. i'll pay attention. i thought rotation was commonly used. or my winter wardrobe.

i'm like doghouse doghouse , i buy it to wear it and if i don't it gets surplussed.

I collect stories...memories...

I have a collection of curiosities...a very expensive fossilized cephalopod (found myself), other fossilized sea creatures, a seventeenth-century pirate coin, uranium glass, wood carvings, etc.

As far as clothes go, I guess to an extent I "collect" some things...Hawaiian shirts being one--I get more than I actually wear, but I think they are almost like works of art.
I've got a beautiful Orthoceras from the Devonian Period about 5 " long.
And 5 Hawaiian shirts- but I wear them.
If I see a vintage Hawaiian shirt in my size with great design and perfect pattern matching on pocket I usually buy it.

Am I being cautioned?
No, not at all. Just didn't know if you knew it existed. Most people don't bother to read the tutorial thread. Others, like Ter and Jimmy, are just perpetually unable to work in more than one reply per post.

Multi quote is lame.

Probably on the radio broadcast somewhere. And no I wont look for it for you right now.

I have it on .mp3, which is shitty. Motörhead is easily one of my top 5 bands all time.

Back on topic, there is always the suspicion that the igent is wearing free t-shirts and cargo shorts when not prissing for the camera to post online.

Lol.

I don't own cargo shorts so I'm home free on that one.
