"The virus is now spreading at an alarming rate. The hospitals have been flooding with thousands of patients, who wait hours to see a doctor - you can imagine their panic.

Normally Wuhan is a great place to live and we are proud of our work - specialists here have developed a guide for coronavirus diagnosis and treatment.

But I am scared because this is a new virus and the figures are worrying.

Two days ago we were told not to go to work because of the risk of contamination. If we leave our home on the hospital campus, we are required to wear masks.

I went to the supermarket to buy food, but there was nothing left - no vegetables or biscuits. Some Lunar New Year celebrations are cancelled."

When China needs to order their officials to be truthful about their numbers you know it's being underreported.

"We now know this is not a virus that will burn out on its own and disappear.

Only the decisions being made in China - including shutting down cities - can stop it spreading.

Scientists have revealed each infected person is passing the virus onto between 1.4 and 2.5 people.

It is known as the virus's basic reproduction number - anything higher than 1.0 means it's self-sustaining.

Those figures are early estimates, but put coronavirus in roughly the same league as Sars. There are two crucial outstanding questions - who is infectious and when are they infectious.

The fact only 25% of reported cases are severe is a mixed blessing."

So another 1.5 people need to be infected and or killed per sick person before it starts crawling on to the shores of North America.

"The vast majority of cases have been in and around Wuhan, but people who visited or had personal connections to infected people were among the scattered cases counted beyond the mainland. South Korea and Japan both confirmed their second cases Friday and Singapore confirmed its third. Cases have been detected in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, the United States, Thailand and Vietnam.

The World Health Organization said on Thursday it was 'too early' to declare the outbreak a global health emergency. Such a declaration could increase public resources to fight a threat but could cause great economic damage."

As if banning air, rail and ground transportation into and out of cities whilst keeping people isolated and idle in their homes is not damaging the economy.

I read somewhere that it is linked to eating bats?

Chinamens be eating weird shit.

“The death toll from coronavirus rose to 41 as 15 more people in China died from the virus that causes respiratory infection in humans if untreated.

Chinese health officials confirmed the tally Saturday. Nearly 200 new cases of pneumonia with coronavirus infection were also detected in Hubei province, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. China widened travel restrictions to the province as the death toll continued to climb.”

How do you quarantine a whole province? Only in China.

Confirmed cases in France and more cases roasting in the Australian heat. Countries could have closed their borders with extreme prejudice like the North Koreans sooner.

Hong Kong declares coronavirus emergency, 2-week school closure

“Hong Kong has declared the outbreak of a new virus an emergency and will close primary and secondary schools for two more weeks after the Lunar New Year holiday. City leader Carrie Lam also announced Saturday that trains and flights from the city of Wuhan would be blocked.

The outbreak began in Wuhan in central China and has spread to the rest of the country and overseas as people travel for the holiday. Hong Kong has confirmed five cases of the new illness. Most schools are off next week, and Lam said they would not re-open until Feb. 17.

The local South China Morning Post newspaper reported a marathon in Hong Kong that was expected to draw 70,000 participants on Feb. 9 was cancelled.”

So you only have a pandemic if you can detect it. That explains why India is immune then.

Honestly, once it reaches pandemic stage, the lab test becomes pointless. People are sick with flu-like symptoms. We can do a rapid flu test to rule that out and then treat them accordingly (isolation and symptom relief). The benefit of all this testing we are doing is for the epidemiology side of the house, but once 2019-nCoV is out in the wild here then testing for confirmation isn’t that useful. Whereas right now we are testing dozens of people who’s travel history and symptoms indicate possible infection just to rule it out (since invariably the flu test is positive).

Well initial onset of symptoms are flu like, this is probably the only thing to contain this, if possible

reports are saying people are infective 2 weeks before onset of symptoms. Each bat and snake eater is infection 2 to 3 others.

Here's a nice little conspiracy for you:
Read yesterday that a Chinese agent named Xiangguo Qiu worked in a Canadian lab in Winnipeg (Canadian National Microbiology Laboratory) and sent samples of several viruses back to China.
That military lab is not far away from the suspicious animal market and in the province of Hubei.

She worked with Ebola and Henipah viruses. That is what was shipped to China. Bats are a vector for henipah. But one would think that if it was a similar RNA virus to it they would have announced it.

For every patient under investigation you see in the media, there are ten that aren’t being reported. Mostly because we all know these tests will come back negative. It’s flu season ffs. They are testing flu positive. The 19NCoV test is just a precaution and alerting the media about each one is just fear mongering

Reports from the Chinese government. Chinese epis aren’t convinced and the WHO are saying no where near enough evidence to say one way or the other. See above: fear mongering.

My neighbor asked me for advice on how to survive the upcoming pandemic and if he should buy surgical masks for his family. I told him to start washing his hands, stop touching his face/eyes and stop picking his nose. Done.

Government trying to put up two 1000 bed hospitals in Wuhan under a weeks, I definitely dont want to be an in patient there.

Quite clearly that's where you send the people who are infected to go die so the rest of the somewhat living still have a chance.

It's finished by 3rd February.

"The number of people killed in China by the new coronavirus has risen to 81, with almost 3,000 confirmed ill.

The national new year holiday has been extended by three days to Sunday, in an attempt to contain the spread."

Let's keep having more holidays to help contain the virus! Novel idea. Permanent holidays forever.

"The local government in Wuhan said no-one from the city had left China in the past four days."

I'm sure some bureaucrat is gloating about that.

"Mongolia - which has yet to record a case of the virus - has closed its border with China."

Isn't that Great Wall?

"We explain that the world wants to see the important, tiring work they're doing to combat the virus. But they're not interested. It could be that they're worried that our presence might imply to some that their patch is not handling this emergency well enough.

One police officer at the entrance to a small town in Henan said to me: 'We don't have a problem here any more so there's no need for you to be here.'"

Evidently keeping tens of millions locked down and artificially extending public holidays dressed like you are about to set of a biological weapon means there is no problem.

Yeah I just saw that shit in my local papers Twitter feed. Looks like I'm breaking out the masks.

Are you joking? I wore one of those for two minutes. It was hot, suffocating and you're breathing in your own stale air and spittle. I'd rather die with some dignity.

Just keep away from Asians.

As far as I can see it’s no more than die of flu, perhaps less, and the symptoms appear to be less sever then flu. Dropbear Dropbear will know.
