Technically they're not dogs, but Hyena's are badass. They are so much larger than you think.

I think that St. Bernards were supposed to rescue avalanche victms or something. I guess water froze. I think I saw this in a Woody Woodpecker cartoon, so don't quote me.

The bottom picture has engendered a lot of controversy. Most people claim that it is a photoshop job. However, if the people are short (and the horse, which someone more knowledgeable about horses than I said was very "pony-like"), then the dog, though huge, would be within the bounds of possibility. The dog is a Neapolitan Mastiff, and the people look Italian. Many southern Italians are pretty short. I calculated that if the man is about 5'3", then the dog would be 34 inches at the withers. Most Neos don't get more than 27", but an outsized one would be possible. I have seen some English mastiffs that big or larger.

Cane Corsos look badass, but many I have encountered have been rather timid dogs.

Hyaenas, when tamed as cubs, make extremely devoted pets. Just about anything a dog can do, a hyaena can do as well or better. They can even be trained to do livestock protection. The probable reason they, rather than the dog, are not "man's best friend" is that they have positively enormous appetites. The ancient Egyptians tried domesticating them but evidently gave up on it, probably for that reason.

Surprised I missed this thread for so long.

Jan beat me to the information on that Neapolitan Mastiff photo.

My favorite breed is the Dogo Argentino. Most definitely badass, as they are bred to hunt wild boar and pumas. They are scent hunters with phenomenal speed, endurance, and strength. However, they are fiercely loyal and affectionate with their human family members. I would post links to some videos, but I am prohibited from doing so currently. Maybe I will post up some photos of our lovable beast when I get home tonight.

Beautiful dog. Is it some kind of pitbull mix?

No, not a pitbull mix. No pitbull at all actually. They are a mastiff breed. Dogo Argentinos are a breed that was started in the 1920's by Dr. Martinez. He originally used ten different breeds to form the Dogo Argentino; The Fighting Dog of Cordoba (now extinct), Great Pyranese, Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane, Boxer, Pointer, Spanish Mastiff, Old English Bulldog, Bull Terrier, and the Dogue de Bordeaux. They now breed true, and any responsible breeder is not injecting any other breeds into the stock (even from the original ten breeds).

You're good now ghost ghost . Once you hit that 5th post all the restrictions fell off.

Also, pick an avatar.
Thank you, Rambo. Avatar has been added.

Aren't those dogs super nice with children but absolutely vicious when hunting?

Yes, they are incredibly good with people, children in particular. They are also very good with other dogs. As a pack hunter, any dog that is dog aggressive should be removed, and certainly not bred. And yes, they are incredibly vicious with any prey. Their job is to grab onto a boar, which may weigh up to 400 pounds with razor sharp tusks and a pissy attitude, and hold it until the hunter dispatches it with a knife. It is not unheard of for a Dogo to dispatch the boar prior to the hunter getting close enough to do the job.

The wall could have some traction material that gives the dog grip not possible on a regular wall.

Maybe, but he seems to get good purchase on the first upward step, as his forward momentum was pushing him into the wall, so that could explain it. The 2nd upward step, the paws slip right off, it doesn't seem treated to me, but even a flat paint has more grip than a gloss paint. Secondarily, take a look at that neighborhood, does that seem like a place where people think things thru?

Thought through enough to get a dog wall with lines painted on it !

Dog jumps higher than any dog I have ever seen. Good enough for me. Dastardly Latinos are another matter

Cheers!

They jump walls too. Borders. Prisons. Back yards at night. Stop being racialist.

Guinness, who we rescued 7 years ago to the day had to be put down today. No idea how old he really was but easily 10+ for sure. Amazing alpha dog. Never made a wrong step. A leader. Was living in an unheated shipping container with his 2 brothers. Farmer was going to shoot them all. Took him and his brother Ben and the third brother Bear went to someone else.

I'm shattered.
