Spent 30 minutes telling me why he is the only real tailor left in Naples, went over every single detail in my jacket (some of the finishing was very... artisanal let's say), and then proceeded to share with me that of course the price he had given me for this suit was "introductory", and further commissions would need to be at a different price, to be discussed on a case by case basis.

I really like some of Hermes' designs - quite a few years back, they did a series of prints based on Aesop's fables that were really nice. However, I've always had difficulty getting a nice-looking knot out of Hermes' ties. For some reason, the knots are always small and it's difficult to get a decent-looking dimple.

Marinella ties are excellent - lovely silks, decent heft, and tie a good knot (unlike Hermes!).

I have a couple of old Drake's ties that are nice, but most of their ties for the past decade have been too skinny - virtually all that Drake's make nowadays are 7 - 8cm in width.

ololo thats the best you got. That a guy who has a history of trolling you, has effectively trolled you more than once, in leading you to believe my modest collection of semi vintage T&A ties are fake. Even though i have in the past posted multiple photos of such ties separately and with a variety of jackets and suits to this very board. Just look it up. You are now just making a fool of yourself.

Trolling aside, the other 3 Neapolitan tailors I have been dealing with have been nothing but professional, incredibly nice and accommodating, so not sure what constitutes "standard Napoli business practice", but I don't think it applies to high end tailors.

Wow, you are easily offended. Let me explain...

Obviously you should have expected a different treatment at the other three tailors you tried. Two of those are former head tailors at rubinacci. A luxury outfit (just like e.g. Caraceni), targetted at dealing with int’l clients and more importantly applying an int’l approach to their business. That is very uncommon in napels. Paone and panico continue to apply that practice to their current businesses. I have nothing but good experiences with them too.

i have no first hand experience with dalcuore. But i’m sure that they have been thought a lot on how to work with int’l clients and apply int’l business standards by ethan and the chinaman at brio beijing (and now countless other azns). Like they have groomed ambrosi (read up on him). you are however completely wrong to assume that their way of doing business is the standard by which the majority of other tailors in and around napoli will treat a new customer.

Wasn't offended, just found your "non-serious bespoke tourist" characterisation amusing, let's say. You can't deny it sounds like coming all the way up from a very high horse, my dear. I don't know what differentiates a serious from a non-serious customer in your eyes, and I'd be very curious to learn more about it.

In any case, I would expect the treatment I got from the others (as well as a few more I've dealt with over times in Naples, like Cerrato, Golia, Capelli, etc.) to be the standard, and Mimmo to be a bit of an outlier, which up to the antics part I thought it was part of the show.

Business-wise, If everyone else in Naples behaves like Mimmo, and my international friends are the oddity, then so be it, I'll probably keep on taking my business to the ones that don't change prices on the go. All things being equal, I don't see what the added benefit would be to continue encouraging this business practice.

If the better standard comes from serving international clients, then great, that's what Mimmo should be doing too (by the way he has plenty of international clients and does not shut up about them either). I imagine he would like to keep on making money with his business, right?
