Tis the season for garden parties. Do you ever attend? Do you host one? Is it anachronistic? What are the essential elements of a proper garden party?

What do people wear? Is it okay for seersucker to drag on into the evening? What leather soled shoes are made for traipsing around muddy affairs?

Is it embarrassing for a young(er) man to hide in the shade of a tent or tree all day?

No one in central London has a garden big enough to host a party. Rooftop parties are definitely a thing though, but there's no special dress code for those.

If I were back home, I'd wear my seersucker trousers, a white button down and a navy blazer. Tieless, navy knit tie or bow tie depending on the crowd/my mood. Of course always with black loafers.

The only essential element is lots of booze. Pitchers of pimms cup lemonade and/or champagne will do, again depending on the crowd.

If you really need shade buy a hat and wear it. Nothing embarrassing about avoiding skin cancer.

Down here in the South garden parties are big. Seersucker can drag all hours without question. Light Blue or cream linen suits or jackets are de rigeur as well.

Wear shoes you can afford to lose.

Can I come to yours?

No mate, it's not for me. But you can go join the others peacocking here: http://www.fashionmagazine.com/scen...rden-party-2015/slide/gatsby-garden-party-01/

It usually happens next month.

Doesn't Her Majesty host one at Buckingham?

I have two knit ties from my foolish years on StyleForum. Hmm so people just walk around on grass with their leather soled shoes, potentially mucking them up, and have alcohol or tea and socialise?

Basically. Grab some reasonably priced spectators and have at it.

Well, in the south tea means iced tea that's sweet. At least, that's how I remember my time in Georgia.

Not sure how it is when you go as south as Rambo.

Seeing as Grand Potentate Grand Potentate is grumpy and doesn't want to host (or he's busy getting banned from other forums), let's do it at Thruth Thruth 's place. He has enough weird tree structures in his house that it looks like a garden anyways.

Black loafers only!

Terrain is not suited for delicate loafer-clad feet.

The invite will specify boots only, no London weekend casual (no ties, no jackets, no sewn military creases)

Does the Queen count?

An old university friend of mine was just invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace because she's on some sort of regulatory committee and she sent through some photos. The ladies all wore dresses and the men wore dark suits, as far as I could see. Most ladies wore hats of some description, but none of the men were wearing any headgear at all.
