Because Betel didn't understand:

Why people get such shitty speeds: Blocked ports

The basic gist is that you're going to go through your router/modem to open a port, which is the equivalent of a traffic lane for your internet highway, to let through all your torrents (traffic). By default, all of your ports (lanes) are blocked for two-way transmission. So, functionally, your highway is only running one way, and that way is OUTBOUND. Your incoming traffic is essentially for people getting out of their cars and walking down the highway.

Using the fucking thing: EASY

Depending on your operating system, you're going to use one of 2 softwares:

Windows: http://www.utorrent.com/
Here's a guide to setting it up: http://www.utorrent.com/help/guides/connection-setup

Mac: http://www.transmissionbt.com/
Here's a good guide for it: http://www.simplehelp.net/2008/07/17/how-to-use-transmission-as-your-bittorrent-client-os-x/

Linux: You can go fuck yourself.

After installing the software, what you want to do is setup port forwarding. Here is a very comprehensive site detailing methods for all types of modems and softwares:

http://portforward.com/

Find your device in their database and it will basically walk you through whatever you need to do via lovely, color images.

After that, you just need to find torrents that you want.

Betelgeuse thinks he might got it.

So I just need to download that program and search and voilà?

Betel doesn't read....

First download the program, then you need to setup your modem/router, then you need to find the torrents.

I saw the video then read about doing I don't know what with the router and then I thought: I should stick to the video. Haha.

Another huge thing to understand is what your ISP's data limits may be. You don't want to start this and then get some big bill.

Also... a non-US VPN is a must.

Where can I check my data limits?

No idea. Contact your internet service provider. Or look at your plan online. Every ISP is going to be different.

Is there a reasonable limit? By that I mean is there a number I should look for? Or like a range in which from certain quantity is not possible to use torrents.

Honesty, you want unlimited. It depends on how much you use the net otherwise. I don't know, maybe 500 gigs a month?

Most ISP's only put caps on your speeds, but will start to throttle them downwards after you hit a certain threshold.

Why would encrypting his HD be more important than something like a VPN?

Protects the data you have on the hard disk from "intrusion".

Edit... I don't think its more important... both are.

Can you encrypt and external hard drive?

drive be accessed freely to play media on it? Does it slow down the drive or the bit rate of the media played on it?
Yes, yes, and yes it does slow it down. Not terribly, but its not going to be as fast as an unencrypted drive. Its more for storage purposes rather than streaming.

Can you elaborate on how a music streaming device like squeezbox or sonos can access the data?

And can you encrypt a folder only?

With an automated setup like that I don't think you would be able to accomplish it. But i'm not 100%. Theoretically, when you first mount the device, you would have to give the encryption password. I'm not sure if after a certain period of time it would reencrypt itself or not. Certainly if it dismounted.

In a case like this I wouldn't recommend encryption. What would you need it for just to stream to a sonos?

I just want to understand what the capabilities are. Yes, I want to stream music with non-pc units, watch videos on my desktop from network hard drives, etc. If I encrypt them, can I still do all of this.

I find the speed reduction nearly unnoticeable and have no problems streaming AVI files from my encrypted USB drive (although the USB port is 1.1, I think, so take that into account).
Through what kind of setup? Does it mount and dismount the drive? Do you often have to enter in the encryption key?

I've been thinking of encrypting the system drive -- so that you have to enter the password whenever you turn on the computer -- but for know, I just have two encrypted files that I mount through the TrueCrypt interface. Whenever they're mounted, they work exactly as a normal folder, only that you have to open them through the icon to the right on the taskbar. The downside of not having the whole system encrypted, as I understand it, is that some programs leave traces on the system drive even if they're executed from another drive, which of course might compromise your case if you claim that you've never downloaded them.
Correct. You could always just run a batch file to clean the hd every time the drive is disconnected, program is run, etc.. So long as you know what you are looking for.

You guys talking about encyption and that stuff and I'm like...

So, I was going to download that uTorrent but the free version is not protectiong you for files with viruses. Is there a lot of risk about that?

There can be. Especially if you run windows. MP3's are usually ok. Just make sure you run a good virus scanner. Especially if you're trying to download executable software files.

Mmm i don't even know if I have a virus scnner haha I suck at technology.

So, uTorrent is installed. Now I should check that port thing, correct?

What in the actual fuck! I did that port searching thing and 3 trojans were encountered by the PCSafe scan or something like that!
