Harrington Jackets

A lowly Uniqlo G9 knockoff, but I love the fit and it works well with much of my wardrobe.
‘Knock-off’ doesn’t really apply to the Harrington design, since there are so many claiming to be the origin. It either has the correct details or not. And if there is one thing I hate it’s people trying to ‘update’ the classic Harrington features for their own spin on things.

I bought a Ventile Harrington because of the Ventile. And it has solid Bemberg lining. Sacrilege.

I get changing the fabric, not the pattern. A few pages up, people were getting pissy about a 90/10 cotton/nylon mix which was dumb.

I’d love a harry in ventile (I used to spray mine with a noxious silicon spray). I’d still stick with a tartan lining though.

This is an excellent bargain at £50.00. I wouldn't buy it at £250.00 with the Grenfell on my wishlist.
I am wearing this today. It's very lightweight compared to the Ventile. I am really happy with my bargain buy.

Is this worth getting, or will it languish in the wardrobe unused, just another beigey wind sheeter, but then again you can wear it inside out:

this is cool:

This looks like a pretty good quality copy of the Tom Dord G4-inspired Bond jacket:

(Sleeves seem a bit long though)

i have one (1) genuine old skool Barracuda Harrington - in a cream/light beige. Because I wanted to.

I only ever wear it with jeans - its the most dressed up I go with jeans. I'd wear another colour with Ivy style chinos and Desert Boots if I had another one.
For me jackets are a issue for OCD - ( Not OCBD) - jackets now - remember I'm an old man - need the right pockets - especially one high on left chest to hold mobile - preferable slanted inside - and the right heavyness for temp. I hate to be too hot or cold. So I have many casual jackets.

I’ve probably owned over a dozen Harrington’s over the past 30 years. I got rid of my last a few years ago when I realized it made me look like an old golfer, but I have yet to find a good replacement lightweight jacket for cool summer evenings and travel. Thinking I may get another navy Harrington.

I guess part of the point I was making is that a Harrington worn with anything much else than jeans - say esp. tailored trousers - will make you look like pensioner on Seniors Discount Lunch Day at the RSL.

These days I have drifted to Stan Ray etc, oversized U Ts from Uniqlo, shirt untucked and sneaks - looking like an old age pensioner who somehow got lost got in skateboarding and hip hop or as my son says I look like a short arsed Larry David who got dressed in the dark on a bad day..

Yep. I used to wear the blue Harrington with off-white jeans a bit, but all the rest are best with blue jeans. Wearing a Harrington over tailored clothing is nearly as bad as throwing a Barbour over a suit. I had a dark tan jacket from Merc that had better than the pale ones, but still had too much of an old man vibe.

You are the Shooey of leather and other jackets
#LeatherDaddy

Seriously, I do own too many jackets for this climate. Trying to cut down to four casual jackets and four tailored jackets.

Also, I just ordered the blue James Bond Harrington from Australia, I mentioned above.

I have a lightweight Schneider and a heavyweight Private White Ventile. I have a Grenfell in Grenfell cloth on my wishlist. However if the Tom Ford copy is a 100% cotton. I might be tempted.

It is a heavier 100% cotton, though a lot of sizes are sold out in this run. There were a lot of good reviews, but I wonder whether they are Bond fans or Harrington fans. Anyway, I’ll let you know what I think, when it arrives.

Personally, this is one style of jacket where I don’t have an issue with a little synthetic fibre in the outer shell. But if you only want 100% cotton then Jump the Gun may still be an option. I honestly can’t remember and their site doesn’t specify. I’ve actually come to prefer the sewn-down yoke they copied from Merc over the more traditional umbrella back.

I know Merc has a touch of the poly in it, though it’s a nice weight to their jackets. Just wish they did raglan sleeves. Gustin use a heavier cotton canvas, but the lack of a tartan lining will be a deal-killer for many.

How do you like the Private White in Ventile?

It's very solid. It's more suitable for spring and fall than summer and winter.

I am very happy with it...

It just arrived and I am thrilled with it. It’s a light summer jacket but not flimsy at all. Lovely Bemberg lining. Sizing down to a Small gave me the perfect slim fit which still has full mobility when worn over a polo or tshirt. The sleeves are long (by design) but I’m not going to rush to the tailor just yet - I might keep them at James Bond length.

Only ‘complaint’ for now is the zipper - a #5 double YKK. I like chunky zippers that are easy to use and don’t break. The Tom Ford jacket looks to have had something similar to this, but I’d still opt for a #8 if I could.

Still very happy with my new jacket. I’ll get around to taking some pics of it soon.

I just noticed S&M have more Harringtons coming in for spring. I’ve never seen one irl, but they look decent. May not be 100% cotton, which I know is a deal breaker for some. G4ish style, but with the adjusters raised off the hips to the waist:

Another one. Not really my cup of tea, but I can imagine a Harrington jacket cut from a dark Harris tweed or Moon gun check could be kinda cool. This, otoh, look like it was conceived by Hellen Keller.

I've seen a few in real life - they don't work

Nice colour, but the long and loose fit and quilted lining would be a dealbreaker for me. Still, very nice to see mall brands staying fairly true to the classic:

I like that.

Finally snapped a few pics of the Royale Filmwear Tom Ford Harrington. I can’t say enough positive things about this one, though it’s hard to get a decent photo indoors as it is such an inky deep blue that it looks nearly black.

No knitted cuffs.
No knitted hems.
Not a Harrington IMO.
Still looks decent and the fit is good but too severe a colour to wear with bright tan boots.

Pretty classic G4 features, IMO. The lack of tartan lining and flapped pockets, perhaps the single collar button are where it deviates from traditional Harrington features.

Chocolate suede on most light.

Remind me. Do we prefer Harringtons in Beige or Navy/French Navy? Looking at these from Grenfell

In other brands I’d say navy for sure. Beige washes out everyone who isn’t super swarthy and gives off serious pensioner on the golf course vibes. Navy works with everything except, arguably, dark denim jeans.

That said, the Grenfell beige looks more sage on my monitor. And since the lining is more muted than your typical red tartans, which would allow it to go with a wide range of other colours. While I prefer the darker green, I think beige would still be a decent choice.

Another pic of my new Harringtonish jacket and another of me modelling it (with dark denim) while in Bolivia:

this has easily become my go-to casual jacket for most weather. Even my mum digs it! 😁

Royale just restocked their Harrington (a Tom Ford copy, itself a G4 homage). The jacket now has a split waistband underneath the adjusters on the back, which was a detail missing from prior versions and the zipper pullers have been beefed up.

Not really a Harrington jacket at all, but I’m not sure it deserves its own thread. I found this cool Japanese repro of the McGregor Antifreeze jacket worn by James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause:

I’ve owned a few red Harrington jackets to try to get a similar look without the blouson, shiny look of the original.
