How to Make Friends as an Adult — and Why It's Important

"Easy as the fix may sound, it can be difficult to keep and make friends as an adult. But research suggests that you only need between four and five close pals."

4 or 5?...Blimey I'm down to 1 or 2. Every year I keep kicking out more and more parasites.

"Loneliness is on the rise, and feeling lonely has been found to increase a person’s risk of dying early by 26%–and to be even worse for the body than obesity and air pollution. Loneliness wreaks health havoc in many ways, particularly because it removes the safety net of social support. ;When we perceive our world as threatening, that can be associated with an increase in heart rate and blood pressure,; says Julianne Holt-Lunstad, professor of psychology and neuroscience at Brigham Young University and author of the recent study linking loneliness to mortality. Over time, she says, these effects can lead to hypertension, which increases risk for cardiovascular disease."

Definition of close is probably different around the world.

Are we going by: A friend will help you move, but a close friend will help you move a body.

If you've lived in a couple of places and worked on several different projects and teams, but you're not into team sports and club events, I've found you jettison more friends than gain. The years and divorces can make people bitter, or leave them with chips on their shoulders and inferiority complexes than manifest itself in odd ways. These people become a baggage as you get older.

I class myself as a lone wolf these days, whilst I'm all up for a bit of regaling people with tales of daring do and global adventure and I can still command respect and entertain well, I realise it's all loose associates and alliances these days with the exception of family. If I didn't have a wife and kids, I would make more of an effort, but I have zero in common with single middle aged people, or middle aged couples without kids.

Jews or Gentiles? And do imaginary friends count? And lastly. . .

I'd count about 20 people or so as close friends. I'm having dinner in a little over a week with three friends I have known for over 60 years. A co-worker once quipped I was "best friends" with the whole world!

It's quite clear I'm headed to the grave early given I only have two. Shall I put out an advert?
