Guys, I think for the very first time, I feel like my appetite for shopping and watching sales is finally done. How am I supposed to enjoy all the neat stuff I shopped when everyone’s stuck at home? I feel that this situation sucks because I really am wanting to go into be a bit more fashionable. Before, I was always the guy at work wearing suits, and rotated in jeans and a tee during the weekends when I went to chill with friends. I started redoing my wardrobe just before this COVID nonsense and lockdowns started. In February, I was donating most of my clothes, and started thinking about what would look great and fit me well.
I had pics and spreadsheets of what I was trying to evolve my wear into beyond mall brands and my Brooks Brothers go-to. I also knew that I wanted clothes that would last me a while. Not just that, I wanted ethically sourced companies to support. That meant doing more research and paying a lot more for that. I was fine with that. I decided to look at what Nordstrom had and made a wish list. I looked at Vince, Theory, Bonobos at first when I started. Something to build on. I researched what folks recommended from those brands. The stupid part was I never even thought about looking at sales or FMF. Man, oh man, I sure feel like a sucker now after being invested in this sub. I bought shit like a suede bomber, hoodies, jeans, and a pair of CP Achilles at full retail price. Mind you, this was still when spring was right around the corner. I chucked it up to thinking this was the going rate for trying to be fashionable.
After finding this sub, I absolutely watched and waited on deals for the next few months. I found brands I would’ve never even been interested in before. Brands like Norse Projects and APC to build upon the basics. Then John Elliott, Rag & bone, SLP, MM GATs, Kooples, Corridor. Then experimented on raw denim on brands I never heard of, like Oni and Iron Hearts. I’ve taken an interest on everything. I researched everything before I purchased anything. Sizing guides, recommendations from here and MFA, I even read a lot of reviews. I think about what goes with what fit for each article of clothing. If I couldn’t pull off at least 2-3 fits, I didn’t buy it. I found a website called twelve70 that recommended fits for you. I got smarter, too. Some sites post their sales like dead ass on midnight. Some even have occasional glitches (JCrew), and I absolutely signed up to get that sweet, sweet discount. If I liked it so much, I signed up for another one. I looked at codes that folks were generous enough to donate. I was a well oiled machine scouring for the best possible deals.
Even though I have the means to do so, I realized that not everyone is so lucky. I know people and businesses are hurting from all this. I looked at myself and thought that there’s no one going to be around to tell me that I look so much better, or that I’ve changed quite a bit with everyone at the office WFH. Luckily the restrictions have been easing in some capacity in my state, and people have been allowed to come back to the office. So at least I’ve been able to try out some of the things I’ve bought. Not to flex on empty parking lots, but just to have a new look, and feel great.
I recognized how fast you can rack up a bill, even with all the sales around here. That dopamine rush of finding an amazing deal and thinking about the fits felt wonderful. But as with anything, it’s all but a fleeting moment in time. You need moderation and enjoy the finer things in life. I think we could all use a lesson here these days. We need to reflect and holy shit there’s a sale on Wyatts and it’s in my size what the fuck those things never go on sale.
