I thought the rape of the Danish backpacker or the American was bad enough. This is why I will never permit one of my single female acquaintances from going to some yoga convalescent temple or shrine or whatever in India without a phalanx of eunuch bodyguards.

The article mentions the men speaking fluent Japanese. I'm wondering if they have yellow fever to an extent that they learned the language or if this was just a side benefit.

How is the rape of a few tourists in a country of over 1B people shocking? Anywhere you go will have criminals, poor cities are rife with crime. Here we have large numbers of solo women travelers in extremely poor areas with tons of people. Just looking at basic probabilities some people will get victimized - the real kicker is that the rape of countless Indian women gets ignored while extremely small numbers of foreigners makes for international headlines. Seems like all rapes/crimes are bad but some are more bad due to the status of the victims - racism on a societal scale?

Well, it's an international incident. That gets attention.

The India rape problem has gotten out of hand. It's like an episode of Game of Thrones.

Maybe they should focus on their cultural norms that promote strife and violence not to mention corruption in their police and government. Seems like this is more of a symptom then the underlying problem.

Every dysfunction can be traced back to the inequality in the social determinants of life. changing that is all but impossible. the elite won't allow it

It's all interwoven. You get exactly the government you deserve. When you allow the government to be a piece of shit, it's hardly fair to expect their population to correspond to behavioral norms.

And India is most definitely a piece of shit. They like to believe their better than the Pakis, but it's neck and neck.

I didn't say it was shocking, I was just disgusted.

I recall now I must have commented on the incident on StyleForum with the Indian woman who died on the bus who was raped and then sodomized with a pipe and left for dead. I was looking for that thread here. They've already hung the original perpetrators and had countless demonstrations. After that, there was some European woman raped in a camp with her boyfriend/husband. And another who was asking for directions in town. And now this.

Originally it was explained as a caste, have-have not class issue with migrant workers from rural areas or out of province going to other areas, integration issues, and other malarkey, but attacking foreigners is clearly beyond that.
