Leather Jacket Thread

in a moto-style it wouldn't be too bad. i've never been too big of a fan of the short jacket style but if it looks good on you then go for it

Like I said, I’m not a fan of short jackets either - which is part of the appeal of going custom. I’d say both of these are about 1 to 2 inches longer than traditional or what’s popular these days.

I have a long torso. Or stumpy legs? I shit you not, when I’m seated I tower over guys who are 6’2 though I’m just six even. People used to tell me that means I needed shorter jackets to make the proportions look closer - which may be the case, but it also feels just wrong.

That’s mine in the middle, in production:

it looks so flat

thank you. thank you. i'll be here all week. don't forget to tip your waitress.

Gotcha. Yeh, I’m not worried at all about how that pigment died Shinki brown horsehide will look. It’s pretty damn amazing.

The aniline brown is also special (though a little orange in sunlight) but he stopped because it is hard to perfectly match panels due to variation.

Completely ruined by that vertical pocket. What an absolutely woeful decision. A classic style influenced from decades ago ‘updated’ with a lame attempt at modernisation to accommodate the ubiquitous cellphone. It looks like a combination of Avirex designed by The North Face or something. I’m sure you could have got them to make a special phone pocket on the inside.
Hope your next one is better. This is truly a mess.

I am very happy with it. There will be a couple day delay - I requested a single pull zipper and they put on a double which will need to be changed out. I also asked for a very slight western yoke, but that’s on me - I noticed in the test fit jacket that the tile was a bit too slight and didn’t say anything since I didn’t want anything too extreme. I like the vertical pocket, though I will remove the leather pull. I have an inside pocket for my phones. Looking forward to receiving this one, while the cross zip should be shipping from Scotland at about the same time.

I think I waited 3.5 months for Greg to make my jacket. His business is growing exponentially. Last month the wait time gee to six months and just a couple of weeks later it hit 9 months.

He’s going to face some tough business decisions soon - cut off orders at a certain cap, take orders from the weirdos who are willing to wait a few years for a jacket, jack up prices to reduce demand or bring on other staff to help with production.

Or he could take in as many orders as possible, stop producing anything, and invest the money in fitting out a wine bar in Seoul.

Just a cool pic of Aero’s Rockefeller car coat and Field’s cafe racer:

not a fan of that car coat. weird lines and button holes. the cafe is fantastic but you really need a particular body type to pull of the look. plus those zipper pulls are hideous.
I dig the car coat, but in a different leather. Definitely a Fight Club seventies look that isn’t really for me - but I like it. Looks a bit more subtle in black goat here:

I’d say I have a cafe racer body. Most places put the leather ties on the zips to help when wearing gloves, but they are easy to take off.

yeah not quite as 70's looking in the black but i think i like the brown better. if you're going to go for the look why not go all the way?

Agreed. I really dig it, but it’s not my style.

It’s actually based on a 1930s Levi’s leather jacket. Here is is in a russet Vicenza pigment dyed horsehide:

Agree with all of this.
My only other gripe is the vertical lower pockets look off somehow. I have a cafe racer which I haven’t worn in a while and I can’t remember how the lower pockets are! Probably angled but I’m away from home now so can’t check!

The original Buco J100 cafe racer of the 50s didn’t have had warmer pockets - imo they all detract from the clean lines of the ‘racing shirt’. If I had one made I’d definitely do two and not four pockets. I can’t remember if the original had angled or straight top pockets - probably angled like the one above.

OK I’m home now and I just checked! Mine has more or less vertical lower pockets but they’re not zipped they’re jetted which makes the appearance more subtle.

If I was getting a bike jacket made I wouldn’t get those little ball zip pulls. As a kid there was a cheap shop in my home town that sold bike jackets. Quality was crap but one detail I remember liking was large chunky rectangular zip pulls. I seem to remember a lot of bike jackets then also had a diagonal zip pocket on the lower left arm, I’m assuming to keep your lighter or keys in.

Here’s an original

Some brands have kept the original two pocket style.

The above mentioned Field Leathers:

I don’t think I’ve seen a jetted pocket on a J100, but maybe on a more generic Schott style?

Not my field, but I like this one, pretty old fashioned.

Absolutely. 1930s Cossack jackets are making a comeback now, but I think the short car coat of the same era is much under appreciated - probably because most examples are big and boxy to wear over suit jackets.

I think I remember reading an interview with Ken from Aero saying all his designed were pillaged from pieces made between 1920 and 1950. He said he would never consider adapting any styles that came after the 50s.

Johnson Leathers absolutely killed it with this custom Luftwaffe in Horrween Vermont, with a button-in mouton collar:

Quite like the look of that one DB.
How many leathers do you have now? Seems like you’re amassing a bit of a collection but since the world seems to be aiming at ever more casual outfits there are a lot worse paths to take than a decent looking leather jacket, chinos/jeans/cavalry twills and chelseas / desert boots / military style lace up boots. Something akin to McQueen’s Great Escape gear. Miles away from the hoody and sweat pants discussed on the other thread.

I only have two: a heavy and a medium weight brown jacket. I still enjoy looking at some of the classic designs being made now and may add a black jacket at some point. I don’t want to turn into a collector - better to have a couple of jackets you wear the crap out of than a big rotation, IMO.

Thanks, man. I definitely have a soft spot for 1950s work and youth culture wear.

The dude has bought about ten custom leather jackets within 12 months. While I don’t ever want to be like that, I do like his taste (in jackets and boots, at least). Here is Jin’s new (and his second) custom creation from Greg Field. This is a Buco J24 style in black Shinki aniline hide, with epaulets and belt removed and two snap-on mouton collars. I like the front drop and clean lines, though I would have used brass hardware. The collar needs shaping, but overall I’d say Greg nailed it once again!

Jacket looks amazing. Pity leather jackets look like shit on me. Why is he wearing a mask for selfies?

Anonymity, I presume. I really wish he would take the hat off or just crop the pic from the neck up.

Some crafty eBaying here. Used CHP police jacket (may not be true surplus, since it doesn’t have a badge holder) meets a ladies fur coat.

This is very very cool!!
Did you do it yourself, or had someone do it?
Oh not me - a Dutch jacketeer who posts on another forum.

Detachable mouton collars are growing on me - kinda softens the whole outlaw biker wannabe vibe on some of these cross-zips.

Dude in a 5.5oz leather jacket! This is heavy heavy boot leather or thicker! My thickest, heaviest jacket I’ve owned was 4oz and that felt like armour. The two I have now are 2.5oz medium and 3.5oz as my heavyweight jacket.
