I'm thinking of getting into homebrewing. I like beer, but I worry that this is a monumental task that will drain the joy from it.

That reminds me: I received a kit for Christmas but didn't get the brew pot. Also with a toddler who takes commands as well as a deaf mule...I decided it wasn't the time to start.

My girlfriend's dad does this. It seems like cooking for men, as you get to dabble like mad, but there's a bunch of sterilization and waiting and keeping stuff at certain temperatures yadda yadda. Apparently if you do much, you'll consume lots of space with full vessels all over.
His stuff tastes good, but he's obsessive and has been at it for a while.

I guess the horror story I heard about the set up exploding sticky goo all over was just a hapless idiot?

Well, its still fermentation, so it could blow up in your face. But if you have any semblance of an intellect you should be able to avoid that.

A quick search reveals that there is some place in the next town over that not only sells the supplies, but will let you do it on their premises. Presumably this means I could dabble without getting stuck with all kinds of oddball jugs and stuff should it not really prove to be a lifelong thing.

Off-site homebrewing does remove the space issue. Girlfriend's mother is livid about there being giant jugs and stacks of bottles all over the house.
