Hey guys,

I want to buy a speaker for home but there are a lot and I want one that get the best sound. Yesterday I went to Bang & Olusfen to see some speakers. The BeoPlay A9 is a beauty and the sound is really great, I mean wow but it is way out of my price range.

So I went to the iShop and saw the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppeling, A5 and A7 speakers. I think the A5 and A7 look nice

And the Zeppeling too

But would love to hear if you have any other recommendations.

Thanks!

Ok, let's start with how much you're willing to spend, and what you're going to be using the speakers to listen to?

Well the A7 is in pesos $12,000 that would be good but the A5 is $7,000 so that would be better. Now $10,000 pesos or less would be ideal.

What am I going to listen, my iPod. I love that AirPlay function and I listened yesterday to some Hooverphonic songs and damn they sound amazing. Very clear.

So you just want a single speaker that plays music from your iPod? You're not going to use it for anything else like watching TV or movies or anything like that?

BTW - those B&W systems are horrendously overpriced for what they do. You can get great sound out of something MUCH cheaper, or build a whole 5.1 setup for way way less than that.

Yeap. We have an amplifier but we don't really use it. I can put loud music otherwise the neighboors will be mad. So I don't need something massive, just something that covers well the are andready to go. Mostly when I have guests to watch sports we go to the Adult Saloon we have in the condo and put the event there.

Or anything by Klipsch. I am a fan of their products and used to have their reference line for my home theater setup .

The Reference 42s are in your budget (assuming you are just getting two).

Those are super cool! But how much do they cost?

80 square meter is your standard bedroom size? :spit:

But lets say yes. For the living room.
Shit. I thought that read ft. My bad.

So that's pretty fucking large for a single room. 1 single speaker wouldn't really be enough to push that much room IMO.

Right now we have 4 little speakers two of the are Bose and those sounds nice and it's quite good cause the ceiling it's not that high and the way it's constructed kinda helps the sounds.

And you have an amp, right? So why not just upgrade your speakers?

Well I hate the amp. Is nice but the iPod dock is a mess, sometimes it reads the iPod well sometimes it doesn't. And generally a set of speaker would be a lot more expensive, doesn't it?

He's in Mexico so he's got to be able to access what they have there.

Not necessarily. You could get a new amp and a new 2.1 setup for less than that B&W system. It all depends on what you're gonna buy.

Really? Interesting. Can you post some options?

Are you going to have something shipped to you? Because that will get expensive.

What brands do you have access to over there?

Nope. Nothing shipped.

I really don't know a lot but I'm thinking the basics and maybe one or another that is less known but good quality. So maybe you can tell me a brand and I can check.

Betel - there are so many fucking speaker brands. Your best bet would be to call around to hi-fi shops and big box retailers and see what they sell.

Costco often sells good shit. SAMS will occasionally have a bargain or two. You just need to see what you can get your hands on.

Haha I know, I want to go to check some local stores to see what the offer. The amp I have is a Yamaha... 5.1 I believe.

The 42s are $300 each, so $600 for a pair. That's like $7000 pesos?

More like $9,000 pesos but still in the range. Let me check the age if they sell those anywhere here in Mexico.

So I went to see some speakers. My amp is for 7 channels so I think that's a good start. I saw one pair... from Monitor Audio taht has 3 speakers, the tweeters, for the middles and the bass. I liked that the box is fully sealed and you can connect them via 2 channels or 4 so you can separate the sound. Price is a bit more than expected, around $20,000 pesos with some discounts but dammit, the voice of Mrs. Wolffs in those speakers sounded as clean as I ever heard.

They are something like this. The ones pictured are cheaper, around $10,000 pesos with discounts but a subwoofer would be needed so that adds another $8,000 to $10,000 pesos more.

Those are pretty big Betel, especially if you're worried about the neighbors. You might be better off with some bookshelf sized speakers for now.

Plus, you're not exactly an audiophile. You don't need several thousand dollar speakers.

Like these ones?

I was looking for the one that Harveybirdman recommended but couldn't find them. The Harman Kardon or that brand how are they?

Bete, don't get one of those uniboxes, they sound like shit. They can't image properly, and your space is WAY too large for it to generate any reasonable level of sound pressure.

You need a good set of speakers and definitely a subwoofer. That's a pretty large room for a pair of budget speakers to manage on their own.

Most important

Oh gotcha, didn't know what "paramount" meat.

I'm seriously thinking about the subwoofer. Cause yesterday the ones I tried we connected a subwoofer and it was not that deep/heavy the way we configred it and the whole sound changes drastically.

I'm thinking a nice set of bookshelf baffle and the sub could work, right?

What do you mean "baffle"? But otherwise yes.

Like the ones pictured above. According to google translate the Messican word is the same as the US word.
It's not the word it's the usage. Baffling is basically the padding they put in the speaker cabinet (box) that keeps the sound from reverberating. So saying "bookshelf baffle" doesn't really mean anything coherent.

Stupid Google Translate. So what would be the correct word?

Do you mean the circular parts that vibrate? Those are drivers (woofer, mid-range, tweeter).
