Odd Things Seen Daily By Me

Ear muff bluetooth headphones when you're driving. It's more of a challenge to drive without one of your senses?

Banking conference. Quite a few European attendees. Maybe Asian ones too. Dark charcoal grey plain or striped suits with burgundy shoes. Why?

Men herding their heel wearing female companions towards known hazards. Metal grates - for example.

Knee jerk reactions on social media. I see some of my contacts now have a star of David on their profile. Are you Jewish? Are you a Zionist?

These same people had Woman, Life, Freedom and whatever was de rigeur.

Please explain the appropriate reaction to the horrors unfolding in Israel over the weekend.

The exact same reaction when China invades Taiwan next week.

Come to think of it even Biden snubbed Netanyahu by meeting him in New York in a hotel instead of the White House last month.

So what is the threshold for you to give a shit about anyone else?

The degradation of official written electronic correspondence.

Someone sends me an invitation to a meeting with a salutation and signature. I accept the meeting request and reply with a salutation and signature acknowledging receipt and expressing enthusiasm for the coming meeting.

They reply - they must be using Office 365 unified communications - without salutation or signature a cheers symbol.

Recaps and reviews...2023 is over. Let's recap. There's still a whole bloody month!

People who have large families - let's say three kids or up. One of them always seems to go rogue but no one seems to care much. If you only have one then you start fretting and panicking when they are gone from the corner of your eye.

This new co-working space community manager joined at the end of September and wore a dark navy blue sweater. Around the time it was late autumn he switched to a tan one. Every day I see him here that's what he wears. His trousers might change colours and hopefully he wears a different uncollared shirt underneath but always the same sweater. It's making me think whether he has multiples of the same colour/brand/make or it's truly the same garment day in and day out.

There's a Muslim guy here at the co-working space. I don't have any problems with his need to book a phone booth and roll out a carpet to pray. But walking around in sandals or bare feet in the middle of winter is a bit much no?

I don't know what to call the effect but videos where the person is in focus and the things in the background become a bit blurry. I see people doing this on YouTube now. I used to see it on TV during sports games in between advertisements. It looks cool the first time you do it but having to watch 10+ minutes of this is unnatural.

On the same note - videos that are recorded with >24fps or >30fps. I don't know why people moving very very quickly is aesthetically appealing. It's like watching a wind up toy go fast.

Should a CEO of an asset management company really be wearing a full suit and tie in a panel with other investment executives & finance columnists in athletic shoes? It's very apparent as the stage is elevated and everyone else is wearing dress shoes.

It depends......if mothers are glued to their phones they won't notice the kids all day. If their only child goes missing, they probably wouldn't even know until the end of the day. Phones can be more important to mothers than kids.

This woman in front of me has been playing Miley Cyrus' Flowers on speaker on a loop for a half hour straight.

People who watch videos when they're walking. I'm not saying I'm watching an Instagram reel or short TikTok or some clip someone sends on a messaging app. I'm talking about entire episodes of what I presume are movies or television shows on your mobile and sometimes a small tablet in landscape mode.

I once had someone shuffle very slowly into the lift with me because they were too busy staring at whatever they were watching to press the floor they wanted to go to. He had a security guard uniform on. You probably have all the time in the world at your job to stare at videos. Do you really need take advantage of watching more for the 1 or 2 minutes it takes to get into the lift and get through your front door?

Fire alarms. When do you know you should leave or you should just wait it out and put on your noise cancelling headphones?

Pro palestine stuff. Lately people like playing social media on their mobile phone...out loud...on speaker. I walked by a bus stop in Chinatown and a black woman's mobile was going "Ceasefire Now! Ceasefire Now!" What up sista? It's not your war.

Cyclists who keep blasting their music. You don't have a windshield or windows to keep the music in. And I don't want to hear your gangsta rap/Celine Dion/death metal/The Weeknd.

What are people feeding their daughters these days? How much do they eat? The amount of overweight Olivia Rodrigo fans was disturbing. The milf who had two boys and was pushing her kid through the fans on Saturday was more petite than some of these teens.

When I go to the driving range on Sundays I always bump into a man who wears a sign that has advertisements on the front and back. I always wonder how many shoes he goes through and what eyeballs he can claim he is attracting on an early Sunday morning. During the week he will go through more populated areas of the city though.
