Odd Things Seen Daily By Me

Homeless people with disposable masks.

If they were washable ones I reckon they didn't have the means to keep it clean judging by the stench of urine about 100m away.

Do you have professional beggars in Canada?

‘I can make more money at this game than I could when I used to work in a factory. This bloke saw me with a laptop once, and then again with good quality face mask. I think I got away with it though. That reminds me, I must take the Mercedes in for its first service....’

You mean scam artists?

There are people who beg for a living . Every weekend I pass by one bloke sitting outside at the top of the stairs charging his mobile phone. Looks like an old iPhone. Most are pretty rough.

There is one lady who keeps saying she is pregnant. Maybe it's the same one maybe it's not but I've seen a woman with a big belly begging around for 5 years using the pregnancy as a tool for empathy.

Scam artists on the other hand have been called out. There was one lady who begged in the financial district that a reporter followed home. She apparently lives in the suburbs with her extended family with a big screen TV. It was supplemental income.

I myself saw this blind bloke with a cane who stood during the evening rush hour at the corner of the financial district asking for money. A few years later I took a lady friend on a date at a rustic restaurant run by a local celebrity chef in the east end of the city. I immediately remembered him when I heard his voice a few tables over. At least he was truly blind and didn't lie about that part.

People making toddlers wear a mask. Most of the time the mask is so big it exceeds the width of their faces by some measure.

I've been seeing this oriental bloke a few times a week take a sun visor cap - the ones with the dark film colour and wear it such that covers his face as a plastic shield. The only issue is it's a cap. It only goes down to the top of his lip.

I'm sure Toronto is very similar to the hammer, we have encampments of bums surrounding the city centre and arena - both which makes sense, the city is full of fellow travellers and iPhone communists.

You can tell a lot about someone based upon how they treat those less fortunate than they are.

I ignore and don't acknowledge their existence?

I don't exactly go and kick them in their nuts and then give them $50 for it.

Is it not better that most of us forum members are somewhere in the working, middle or upper middle class and productive enough to pay taxes?

No - because I'm the son of my father whose father is the son of a ditch digger.
you'd think that is more in line with someone who would be looking out for those who have less, wouldn't you? shared family experience and all that.

i hate to break it to you arny but paying taxes is not a sign of status. in fact the ultra wealthy do everything in their power NOT to pay taxes. now that is a sign of class.

It is a sign that you are a participator and have skin in the game.
no, not its not. again, people do every single thing in their power not to pay taxes. if you think about it the smart ones are the ones that stay off the grid in the first place.

Some people do, a lot don't. In business, I won't engage any of the non-dom expats who want paying in off-shore bank accounts who invariably are the worse kind of fakers and con-artists. Fake degrees in any subject wanted. The University of Canterbury (Seychelles) types.

No one likes paying taxes, but it has to be done. In saying that, my missus has now got one of those lucrative international organisation jobs where she doesn't pay, legitimately 100% in the system, any income tax. And not because her salary is under the threshold.

I don't mind paying taxes, its for the common good.

...I get mildly annoyed however, when they try to bribe me with my own money.

^Some really impressive jumping there - if only Yemen wasn't riven by civil war and filled with starving people, they could be great at track and field athletics.

People who randomly pick Greek or Roman characters as code names for their projects. Sisyphus. Did anyone read at least Wikipedia before selecting these names?

Project Sisyphus is EXACTLY what I'd expect you would be working on.

Actually it's the one that involves accidental incest. I just didn't want to post it because my pissed off post and this might violate my NDA.

When I was in due diligence investigations on individuals the names of boxers and famous bouts were used. You can read a lot into that about creating a vibe, mystique, secret agent fantasies and enticing others in the organization to start their own investigations.

When it comes to that kind of stuff, a simple file number on a database is all you want and need.

Best keep that one under wraps.

Narrow escalators.

I find with the coronavirus that narrow escalators which only fit one person going up or down are now configured to go the same way. That is they both go up and you are forced to take the stairs to go down. I reckon it's to protect you from someone travelling the opposite way from coughing at you when you are adjacent to them?

I have seen urban areas have disposal bins for sharps. But now I am beginning to see in office towers and high traffic public areas with bins for masks and gloves. What would they do with them besides send them to a landfill with the regular rubbish? Do they actually incinerate your discarded masks?

Doing a video call on the street when you have a head dress, sunglasses and a face mask. What is the point for the person on the other side of the call?

Life Lesson #1,436:

Don’t wind your automatic wristwatch off camera during a Teams meeting. It looks like you are wanking.

Adjusting your mask in front of your mobile before you take your selfie.

There's a homeless bloke who makes a fist with his right hand puts it to his ear. Then he makes a fist with his left hand and puts it to his mouth. He then sings and bellows that you can hear him from half a block away and wades through traffic in the city. He never respects traffic lights. He tends to walk on the cyclist path on the side but has been known to walk along the lane markings in the middle. It gets messy when he is trying to make his way through an intersection with vehicles turning every which way in the centre.

My brother's family is quite familiar with him and works their day care pick up/drop off schedule around his appearances.

It's astonishing he still has all his limbs and hasn't been hit by a vehicle yet.

The types of vehicles people use for food delivery. 750i. The $30 or $50 you make goes to fuel costs?

Here, particularly here, in the petrol selling garages around the ring roads of The Hague and Rotterdam, you see a lot of scrawny Moroccan looking dudes in the 20s and early 30s in their tracksuits with what look like handbags which are money bags - they pay everything in cash - in their super Mercedes sports cars in bright garish colours. The police are apparently confiscating these cars off these young chaps if they can't prove how they paid for them, or what job they have to afford such cars at a young age. They're clearly not doing a rigorous job as they're everywhere.

In North America I reckon they call that racial profiling.

Foreign language in international conference calls. Every second sentence prefaced with allora today.

I've attended quite a few teleconferences these last few months. I like it, you can do other things whilst you listen to the drone and do a couple of screenshots at the decisive Powerpoint moment. The last one, an Italian of business rival of mine, actually one of the more likeable ones, had a face mask on for the whole session. It made me chuckle. I get he was in the office, but surely he could have found a space where he didn't need a mask.

When the head of the China office did a video conference way back in March or April - all of his Chinese colleagues (let's say 8 or 10) huddled in a room facing the camera. As a French man he said he had issues making out from the low resolution video and the masks who was who. They all looked the same.

I live next to a commercial office building and for the past few weeks I have seen they are completing the finishing touches on their internal construction. There is one lift frequented by many of the contractors but the lift is kept open at the lobby all the time with a big heavy set security guard sitting inside with a mask on.

I assume this man is required for obscure union or legal reasons to escort contractors to their floors but the poor man sits in the lift all day and must be at high risk for coronavirus given the proximity to all the workers coming in and out all day.

In Rio they use to to have that in all the corporate offices. Poor ladies who sat in the lift all day taking you to your desired floor.

Things I pass by every morning when I walk past the street lobby of the new office building next to me.... Dog crap...human crap....Bird crap.

And I'm not living in Kenya or Bombay.
