If I'm reading the personal e-mail that my role is gone when I'm physically at the office, I'm supposed to return home. Do I turn in my badge and walk myself out the door?

Doesn't really matter. Badges are locked out so the can't get back in.

If the badge is needed to exit, I am sure security will collect it.

No, as an Anglo-Saxon being escorted out of the building with a cardboard box is the only privilege you have in this case, I‘d never forfeit that!

Elon Musk (and his consortium of much smaller investors) now owns Twitter. We need to take seriously the possibility that this will end up being one of the funniest things that’s ever happened, writes Jon Schwarz.

That’s because as of this moment, it looks like Musk dug a big hole in the forest, carefully filled it with punji sticks and crocodiles, and then jumped in.

This was made immediately clear by Musk’s “Dear Twitter Advertisers” tweet as the deal closed.

The statement starts off, promisingly, with a blatant lie: “The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important for the future of civilization to have a common digital town square.”

Twitter currently makes 90 percent of its revenue from advertising. This means that you, the Twitter user, are not Twitter’s customers. You are its product. Its customers are corporate advertisers and, as every businessperson knows, the customer is always right. Grocery stores care about the people shopping for Cheetos, not about the feelings of the Cheetos themselves.

Twitter’s content moderation has sometimes been heavy-handed. But this is not because Twitter is run by a woke mob. It’s because Twitter needs to keep advertisers happy — and their top priority is a certain kind of environment for their ads.

And while Musk has announced a new “content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints,” he will feel constantly compelled to either explain why he’s standing by his underlings’ moderation decisions, or reverse them. Then he will inevitably be drawn into personally making more and more content calls, perhaps giving the thumbs up or thumbs down to individual tweets.

Dude it already is. THe past two weeks have possibly been the funniest thing in the history of the internet.
 
I like those demands for at least 40 hours per week. Does that mean the let's come in and do some clean up or half day catch up on Saturdays or Sundays is back? We used to buy a pizza for everyone to come in and do team building on a weekend half(ish) day.

I‘m neither overly aware of nor interested in „Silicon Valley“, but even I have noticed that basically all tech firms large and small are reducing their workforce, many of them massively. So those headhunters must get creative, I guess.

No this means they spend Mon-Thu in the office and can work Fri-Sun from home.

Not really. there's still high demand for highly qualified tech people, and supply is quite short.

Well I think we can agree that supply has massively increased though? I mean certainly many of those >10k Facebook dudes are highly qualified tech people? Etc. On the other hand, highly qualified people in general are of limited supply, so you may well be right.

I'd say increased to a certain extent but still below pre-war levels, at least here in Europe (including high tech places like Israel). Almost every portfolio company as well as the ecosystem in general lost talent when the Ukraine war started (remember the country had a massive tech dev sector, most tech companies en Europe had dev centers in Ukraine, who had to be relocated, or became volunteer fighters, etc.)

Additionally, the market correction that started in March has pushed a lot of early employees from big pre-IPO companies out, generating a new wave of startups that are coming into the market as we speak. The last 6-8 weeks have been incredibly busy, with activity levels not seen in quite a while.

So my guess is those fb folks will be quickly reabsorbed into the market.

Working remotely or hybrid is the norm now in places like Google. Add that to other issues like stability and you can see why the surviving Twitter staff will be open to offers from tech firms not run by stable geniuses.

I was rather questioning whether those offers exist at all, which belinmad belinmad provided information to above.

In one example, an account pretending to be former US president George W Bush – with the blue tick verification badge to prove it – tweeted: “I miss killing Iraqis [sad face emoji].

Well as of Monday (I think) the blue check does not verify anything, except that someone is willing to pay a few coins for it. Which had been clearly communicated in advance.

For anyone interested, I recommend looking into Matt Levine‘s newsletter, who has been covering the hilarities of this matter from the very beginning. Might even be worth reading some of the older stuff.

Yeh, the market will fuck with that, but generally think it hold true that the best people will take a wfh job at Google over a 40 minimum officer hours Twitter gig for the same money.
