It's all rather after the event now. Too late for justice, but enough to kill-off the bunny look forever. Which I must say, I find very attractive.
 
Although Playboy liked to portray "Good Ol' Hef" as a benign a fun-loving figure with sort of an avuncular relationship to the girls, it was plain as a pikestaff that he was a sex-obsessed debauchee. Any girl/young woman who got involved in the world of Playboy would have to be dumb as a post not to realize that in short order. Most of these girls would probably have ended up as strippers, porn actresses or high-dollar hookers if they weren't in Hef's harem, I suspect.

True for the inner circle around Hef, who was portrayed like some playboy caricature on Gilegan’s Island.

But that was also the absolute genius of it all. They packaged and commodified sex in a way that somehow made it seem less dangerous and sleezy. The magazine mixed some mid-brow art, pop culture and current affairs reporting with porn. Parents were fine with their daughters working in the restaurants in bunny costumes.

The porn wasn't hard core in the 50s, 60s and 70s heyday. Glamour photos really, with very attractive ladies and many actresses in the 70s. Certainly not sleazy.

I've got the hard back editions from the mid-1990s with all the best babes and good jazz journalism in from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Nicely done and quite artistic. As I know, one should never lock yourself into drawn out dismissal cases on what websites were accessed during work time, as one man's porn, is another man's art.
 
Back in the mid 90s, I requested some copies of 1966 Playboy Magazines from the University inter-library loan system - they had some articles vaguely relevant to my dissertation. The librarian raised an eyebrow but put the request in. A month later I got an envelope with photocopies of said articles, along with a review of the Barbarella film and a few naked women pictorials.

It’s still just sleezy porn (nothing wrong with that at all), but cleverly packaged to make it seem like something much more vanilla and somehow sophisticated. Genius marketing from Heff.
 
On reflection, maybe I was being a bit too harsh on Playmates and other Playboy models. I encountered quite a few at trade shows and even in local sandwich shops (Playboy's LA-area headquarters were just down the street from where I worked.) Most of them seemed like reasonably articulate, pleasant-mannered young women. More's the pity they got caught up in the sleazy world of Playboy, but then nobody forced them.

At least Playboy, compared to Penthouse or (God knows!) Hustler, was a good deal more tasteful and classy (to use a word I hate).

I'll try and post some photos in the next day or two, certainly they're not sleazy and I would class as no more than glamour photos.

I never quite understand the puritanical, retrograde and possibly misogynistic attitude that denies the ability for a woman to display her beauty and earn money from this. It's a powerful force and when a lady can earn 100's of thousands on Onlyfans or what have you, who are we to deny that right? All other factors considered i.e. consensual, etc, etc.

The late modern day dandy, Sebastian Horsley, wrote a very insightful article on prostitution in the early 2000's. Paid for sex can be very sleazy and dangerous indeed, it can also be a job and profession, like any other. I wouldn't treat a sex worker with any disrespect.
