Random Questions & Thoughts

From Wikipedia:
“For example, after the Battle of Brandywine, the British made a list the Continental Army prisoners whom they had captured, including their nationality. Of the 315 prisoners captured, only 82 of them (25%) were listed as having been born in America, with many of the rest having been born in England, Ireland and Germany. While white Americans mostly stayed home, the backbone of the army fighting for their independence was foreign born.”

Blimey the yanks outsourced their war of independence.

The American military has always been made up of migrants. Until the past year, it was a one of the main pathways to citizenship for immigrants.

I knew that from a 60 minutes documentary on how some Nigerians were serving in Iraq as a means to citizenship. That said I never thought the war for independence would be outsourced to foreigners. You would think if you felt so strongly about breaking away from the motherland you would spill your own blood for it. At least that's how the narrative was written by the founding fathers.

In spite of the whole ‘plucky citizen-soldiers led by the brave George Washington’ narrative, it was mostly professional Prussian and French units that won battles against the Brits. Washington was a crap military strategist and the American troops were no match for the disciplined Brits.

The US army of the civil war was made up of Irish and German migrants looking for a new home.

European migrants fought the Korean War and undocumented Latinos fought for citizenship during the Viet Nam war.

A few years ago, it was was nearly all undocumented migrants enlisting in Southern California.

When you send out a wedding invitation - is it customary for the woman's name to be first then the man?

I thought it was male first.

Bride first is the tradition- maybe because her parents are paying.

Whatever happened to Paris Hilton... wow - she's 38!

I'm going to get on to six weeks without a visit to my barber. He is usually off this week due to the spring break with his daughter. Does coronavirus and social distances mean barber visits are risky?

Yes. We have close all barbers and hairdressers down. It can wait.

My barber went underground last week. Don't think the hair industry is closed down in Ontario except for voluntary decisions. The wholesaler was still open today in Saskatoon selling hair care supplies albeit with a phone in and pick up outside the door system.

That leads to another question.

Social distancing.

Here I keep seeing distances of 2m preached. Britain and Singapore were preaching 1m. I just saw a tweet that Australia is recommending 1.5m.

As a species, humanity can't even agree on what the standard ought to be.

While waiting to catch the (nearly empty) train this morning, I stood 1.5m away from a lady on the platform. She turned around, glared at me, and moved about 3m away from me. Clearly, she didn't think that I was taking social distancing seriously enough!

She must come from some sparsely populated country where they can afford 3m distances. Mongolia.

My wife went out to the grocery store yesterday. The tellers are now behind plexiglass and the floor is taped at 6’ intervals so that people queuing for the register know how far to distance themselves.

Same here in the supermarkets. And in one place they have team of youngsters going around spraying the trolleys and you have wear gloves and disinfect before you enter.

none of that here

I went to work in another branch office today. The lift clearly says only one at a time to maintain social distance. One couple walk on. I guess they don't give a toss about infecting each other. Then another bloke gets in but can't get to his floor so the space that was suitable for one person now has four including me.

It is impossible to understand how Britain, a small island, could hold sway over such vast populations all over the world without realizing that those subjugated people gave an unspoken acceptance of the empire and imperial rule.

Try reading this while you're practising social distancing:

It also comes in a Penguin edition so should be available pretty cheaply.

Cheers.

I'm watching a documentary on the fall of empire and that statement came from there. Must be for Yanks because the acceptance of HM the Queen as head of state is uncontested here.

I'm wondering how much hand sanitizer, disinfectant and soap I might have ingested in the past 6 weeks.

Who is cutting Dominic Raab's hair? He looks the same as beginning of March.

How the escort and prostitution business is doing in this era of the coronavirus.....

You'd know - tell us.

I don't know. I read a few articles of ones that are on government hand out as a contractor or something and occasionally supplementing that with virtual sessions but there are still a lot of adverts including girls around my block. They aren't offering steep discounts so business must be good.

Prescription medicine can be issued by someone with an NP designation. Nurse practictioner? I thought only doctors give prescription medicine.

Social distance guidelines?

This just showed up on my news feed. I k ow it is a subject dear to your heart, Fwiffo Fwiffo

It's a noble and essential profession:

"Not only is sex work legitimate work, it’s good work. I take pride in helping people live better sex lives and providing them with fun and care. In this job, I see a side of people they don’t really show anyone else, and that vulnerability has shown me that my work can truly help people."

One of my first cousins married someone who turns out to have moyamoya disease. That explains why she tries the hardest to be the number one reviewer on a restaurant rating website. Also explains why no kids, just dogs and the incessant need to travel.

Almost makes me a bit sad I ditched their wedding dinner partway and showed up late missing the ceremony.

Has it been treated with surgery? If not treated, it often leads to strokes but when treated, it seems to have good outcomes.

I didn't know Tom Ford was married.

They've been together for decades - his partner is a journalist/editor. His shirt collar is far too large for his neck, which is a bit embarrassing for the partner of Tom Ford.
