Ski boots

I don’t think these would be covered by the ‘All Inclusive’ thread. I am not sure how many here - if any - are interested in the topic, but as The Winter Olympics kicks off it is as good a time as any to find out.

Early ski boots were leather, with lots of different companies offering them. Then plastic ski boots took over the market. These are mostly made by companies in one small town in Italy, though inevitably some production has been outsourced to the third world.

In the late 1980s, 80 per cent of boots were a simple single/double closure design, with a memorised fit. Ski instructors used these, but racers never took to them. The Salomon company produced the top design - the SX91.

However, Salomon eventually bowed to fashion and went back to four clip racing style boots. They stopped making the old style boots.

As regards style, Technica brand boots use a distinctive orange colour. They are well regarded boots but you are stuck with that colour.

I may start using my Salomon ski boots again. Same goes for my old Salomon monocoque skis. They have a 61mm, waist whereas modern skis are shorter and fatter. Good on piste though, which is where most skiers are. Advertisers market a dream of untracked powder snow - but life is not like that unless you can afford to go heliskiing.

I held out as the last die hard, but I can tell you modern skis are so superior that it's not really an option anymore. I guess you can wear some old ones for kitsch value like a hipster or something.

I still have some 210 Rossignol 5SVs, but they might get mounted on the wall, damn sure not skiing them.

Salomon's quality went to shoite when they moved their production to China. They moved it back to Europe for some of their high-end products but by then the damage had been done. Are La Sportiva still made in Italy? They used to be bombproof.

I honestly always thought Salomon sucked ass. Recreational level stuff.

Everybody is a ‘recreational’ skier - unless you are a racer, or ski instructor. If, by recreational, you mean ‘intermediate’ level then I disagree.

Salomon Superforce 9.1 3s - a black and orange ski from the 1990s was a wonderful, light ski for short radius turns, slaloms, moguls.

Salomon got sold off in the late 1990s.

I had old French Dynamic skis first. Now have Rossignol Bandits but still miss the Salomons. Used to like to try the different skis each season but not bothered now. Hiring skis would be easier maybe - but it is still cheaper to buy your own over a very short period.

Recreational as in the generic rental they roll out for bus trippers. Nordica and Lange were far superior boots and Rossignol, K2 and Dynastar were much better skis. Some Marker, Tyrolia or Look bindings and your set.

Salomon reminds me a lot of Atomic.

Never got on with K2 or Atomic. Rentals are usually dominated by the home industry - French in France and Austrian in Austria. More French rentals in Austria than Austrian in France though.

Liked Volkl a lot for a stiffer ski, but could not be doing with the Masonic logo. Have Look turntable bindings on my Dynamic skis, as well as Salomon on the other skis. Austrian skis often had Marker or Tyrolia. Of little interest to me - except when the bindings do not release. This happened a few years ago when I was in Verbier. Broken leg as consequence.
