Got this email today from Gustin:

The criteria for a product being complete is simple. When it’s the first item we grab from our closet, we know we have hit the mark. Are Gustin jeans the ones we reach for every day? Is the Gustin oxford the one we we grab first? When our answer turns to yes, then we know the product is ready for you. We’ve got a new product that passes this test, the Gustin briefcase. When we head into our shop or take a trip, will we reach for the Gustin briefcase first? Absolutely.

It took us almost two years of sampling with factories from Chicago to Portland to Dallas to find one that was able to produce the quality of bags we wanted. The factory we’re working with is a group of craftsmen who have been working with leather and canvas for nearly thirty years here in California. They’ve done everything from leather jackets, to high-end designer handbags, and they’re absolute pros. This is why we chose them - they care as much about the quality of every stitch as we do. As usual, we’ve spared no expense in material choices from solid brass YKK zippers and hardware to super heavy water repellent twills.

This Saturday at 9am you’ll see the first installment of this long journey. It represents the best of everything we’ve learned and just the start of what’s to come in the Gustin bag collection. We hope you enjoy it and think the value we can offer here is as radical as the first pair of jeans we sold under our business model.

If you’re excited about what we’re doing, and excited about Saturday’s briefcase release, please help us by telling a friend. Invite your friends to join Gustin using our referral program and the top 5 people who get the most friends to join by Saturday will get one of these briefcases for free. It’s that simple.

Thanks for supporting us over these last two years. We’re glad you’re along for the ride,

Stephen and Josh

P.S. - Below is what's coming at 9am on Saturday.

It can't just be me that thinks this is a straight up Filson clone, can it?

Not really caring much about bags, I had to look it up.

Yeah, they didn't clone the snap and those two little loops, but way too much else is just plain identical.

There was some shirt maker years back that was a SF favorite, and their signature was a big dumb box pleat. I remember there being some kerfuffle when CEGO or someone refused to copy it for a customer.

Please tell me more about-

I think the proper term is "taking inspiration from" and it probably happens all the time, although perhaps a little less obvious.
More often than not executives of clothing companies visit the factories (now mostly in Asia) and have a look at the stuff made for other companies. If they like something they will ask for something similar, sometimes only changing the size and colour of buttons or zips, and maybe have a different stitching, but the pattern is a 1:1 copy. It saves that company a lot of money.

I'm sure it happens with watches (or accessories in general) as well as with cars (at least at a lower price range).

Yes, but isn't the standard thing to vary the thing enough to not be too obvious about it? Besides the snap and the deleted loops, they looks exactly the same the more you study them. The leather around the zipper, the way the pocket is just higher than the side seams. The flap curve is identical. They presumably chose a slightly different shade of khaki canvas?
I mean even the construction and stitching, not enough spins were made to hide the benchmark.

I've just been to a fashion law w creatives/designers and tacky lawyers forum this am on precisely - copying / copyright on designs - - free yummy breakfast and well dressed ladies. A bit bloody early for me - left for CBD @ 6.30am after getting to sleep at 2am and waking at 5am. I've been on flat whites and long machiattos all day since 6 am*. I'm wired baby.

Since you asked: I was wearing a Borelli light navy blue linen suit, no spanish sleeves, semi spread collar small blue check on white ground shirt and navy square end knit silk tie with chunky light blue horizontal stripes with medium brown suede city brogues. Clip on shades.

Wanna know about copying? Just ask.

* now i'm on the second bottle of shiraz.
