The 2016 Summer Olympic Games

Looking forward to men's volleyball although one of my favorite Brazilian players Murilo isn't playing for some reason.

I expect this is going to be a high point in the games.

Fire in Rio's Olympic Village Forces Evacuation of 100 Australian Athletes, Officials

A small fire broke out in the basement of the Australian quarters of the Olympic Village in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Friday, forcing the evacuation of about 100 athletes and officials, team officials said.

Kitty Chiller, the Chef de Mission of Australia's Olympic team, said during a press conference, "The stairwells filled with smoke, but the fire was confined to the carpark. No one was injured."

The fire was extinguished by the fire brigade and athletes and officials returned to their quarters after approximately 30 minutes, she said.

An investigation into the fire between the International Olympic Committee and Rio 2016 officials is currently underway.

Chiller said the fire is believed to have been caused by a cigarette in a trash can, even though the Olympic Village is a non-smoking area. "What we think has happened is a cigarette has been thrown in a rubbish bin, or on rubbish, and that's what's started the fire."

She continued, "There's a lot of rubbish around the place which a lot of countries have been talking about for the last few days, left from contractors, left from workers. There are a lot of smokers. This is my real issue. There are a lot of workers and contractors smoking in the village. The athletes' village is a non smoking venue. There's a lot of people just walking around, smoking."

Following the fire, "We've asked for a reminder to go out to all staff and contractors that there is no smoking," she said.

Chiller also took issue with the building's lack of properly functioning fire alarms.

"What we have subsequently found is that the fire alarms had been silenced while they were carrying out maintenance on the building next door to ours," she said. "We hadn't been advised that the fire alarms were silenced, so how we found out was basically smoke in the corridors and stairwells. It's absolutely not satisfactory at all."

Are the Americans in their own special compound or the 550 of them are intermingling with the rest of the athletes in the village?

With every passing Olympics, I think more and more that it should be like the ancient Olympics, and just be held in one place.

I'm on the main site - rio2016.com. I want to see everyone coming from a particular nation. All I get is a link to the local Olympic committee website.

Okay, I click on Athletes and it says there are lots of athletes and the list is not confirmed yet. It's 5 days from the opening ceremony. I'm not looking up Russia here.

The Olympics have more and more become an endorsement event.
I don't think that consuming fast food and sugary fizzy drinks (or beer) should be associated with sports at all.
Also, state funded doping in Russia is bad, but not the (most likely) Chinese version.
Or the privately funded US or Jamaican version.
If a totally juiced up athlete can't win against a "clean" one, what are the chances the latter is not actually that "clean"!

But wasn't Brazil broke after they held the World Cup in 2014? I read that they needed another huge loan for the Olympics to make them happen.

Rambo - I just saw Jimmy Butler highlights for USA basketball. You said he was a minor player.

DeMar Derozan - he's the man...for us Raptor fans.

No different than seeing rattlesnakes and other critters when you golf in Arizona.

That said I had secret hopes that Tiger Woods would have recovered and got a few wins to get into the Olympics but sadly that's not the case. Then again, other than Bubba Watson, most of the up and coming US players skipped and the phony heir to Woods, McIllroy, has issues representing Great Britain.

Yes! The Canadian women footy team won! Gold medal here we come!

That Argentine keeper let in absolute howler today against Portugal.

Rio Olympics sailor Lee Parkhill says Toronto Harbour 'almost worse than what I see here'

"'The water conditions in Rio de Janeiro don't appear as bad as what's being reported, and the Toronto Harbour is sometimes 'almost worse,' according to a Canadian Olympic sailor who is in the Brazilian city for his first Games.

'Most of the stuff in the media, I haven't actually seen it in person,' Lee Parkhill told CBC News on Thursday.

Most of the 'rubbish' only comes after big rainstorms, and he has mostly seen empty water bottles floating around. He said the race courses in Rio look 'like normal, like Toronto Harbour,' where he trained for four years as a teen.

'I've sailed a lot in Toronto Harbour and after a big rainstorm, all the debris come from the Humber River,' he said. 'It's almost worse than what I see here.'"

Definitely not asking this git to do Tourism Canada adverts even if he wins a gold medal.

Okay time for people to chant USA USA ...opening ceremonies.

Okay time for people to chant USA USA ...opening ceremonies.

Ok people, time to laugh at the US Olympic uniforms. Ralph Lauren Hickey Freeman-made Blazers with the USA that electroluminescent my lights up on the back (for Michael Phelps), white selvedge denim and white bracelets.

T shirts that look like the Russian flag. Go USA

You know what was somewhat disconcerting. Gabon sent six athletes and two of them are white. I think there was a coach there who was also white. Then you check and there are only 10k of people in Gabon who are white of 1.5m.

This Iranian woman must be incurring an aerodynamic penalty rowing with her hijab on.

That Brasilian boxer from a favela lost his bout today.
