The Firearms & Sport Shooting Thread

Also planning a hog hunting trip this fall. If you have any ranch recommendations, shoot me PM or if you got land, shoot me a PM. lol

If it’s your first time, I’d try one of those Gucci ranches in the Hill Country where they will guide you, dress it for you and provide full room and breakfast. They will even fly you (cue: Fortune Don or Wagner):

I used to hunt at a friend’s property just this side of Austin. A lot of the BBQ places in the country will also butcher your hog for you for under $100.

Where are my gun owners at!!!
The self defense class I used to help teach folded when the community center limited in-person events due to Covid. I’m too old an unfit for the ‘running and gunning’ sports like IDPA and biathlons now. Haven’t had time for hunting for the past few years and lost interest in target shooting, tinkering and collecting. I put a few rounds through my carry pistol occasionally but aside from that I have little interest in shooting these days.

How big is your collection?

Four pistols, a short barrel rifle and a short barrel shotgun. I may get an air rifle this year as my daughter said she wants to try shooting and archery over the summer.

It is a very expensive hobby I came to find out, also very addictive.

I want a bolt action next and maybe a shotgun. Will be done by then

Competitions are are fun, but unless you have a sponsor it can get very very expensive.

there are a few private ranges out your way that host biathalon and three gun events. Worth going to watch sometime, to see what it’s all about. IDPA is fun, because there are people at all skill levels and it’s more about self improvement than beating other competitors.

Members of the firearms "community" will be saddened by the demise of Michael L. "Duke" Venturino. He was my favorite of all current gun writers--modest, unpretentious and candid, as well as being extremely knowledgeable. Not too long ago, he said to me, "We've known each other for 40 years and never disagreed about anything." He had informed me early this month that his days appeared to be numbered, and so it was. He died last night. He will be terribly missed by his legion of fans and friends.
