The Food Thread

We went to my kids’ favourite lunch spot, The Hobbit Cafe. -a local institution near the university that is turning 50 next year. Everyone else ends up bringing left-overs home to eat in the evening, so this time o decided to order big with the intention of also having left-overs. A pound of beef, muchrroms, avocado, bacon, jalapeños, etc:

I may still be eating this next week.
That looks disgusting in a delightfully delicious way

That foam has been sitting for awhile. You could get better body and higher elevation for licking if they whipped it with an immersion blender right before serving. Or they didn’t put enough of soy lecithin or whatever else they used.

Taste and temperature are unknown to men.

I never enjoyed eating in Italian restaurants when I lived in The Netherlands. Instead of Beef, everything was substituted by Pork and Veal, or just Veal. I couldn't get used to the taste of Veal, unless it was a Doner, then it's unidentifiable but strange tasting...
You're right about the pork and veal. Don't know why. There's a lot of Italian restaurants here, most of them start off well with the antipasti, but go down hill when you get to the main course. There was one in Scheveningen that was run by a mafioso who was on the run and was eventually arrested.

My workmate grows peppers and makes hot sauce each year. People fight to get on his list (only cost is he asks you to make a donation to your local food bank).

I got some this year, which was probably a mistake as I’m only half way through last year’s bottle of piri-piri sauce.

I just had some of the latter with dinner and JFC this stuff is strong! Barely the tiniest dab is all you need to set your mouth on fire.

Finally found a neighborhood pho joint that does good takeaway. They package it in three containers for you to mix at home (cooking the meat in the broth). This was hall of a $10 lean brisket and round steak pho:

You know the way it happens, Asian dude sees a flock of geese at the park, thinking to himself "that bird is beautifull delicious". Uses goose attack as an excuse to the park ranger and snatches it to take home to smoke it on the Webber grill.

likely story

For those who know him...I first learnt about him in Chef's Table. Then I realized this was filmed pre-2020 and I was correct.

He seems to have ditched the waistcoat.

I bought some fresh organic mushrooms from the farmers market today. Cat approved, too:

Not a surprise whatsoever. Even from fifteen or so years ago, I have been flagging this. Chickens now are as big as turkeys.

At the market, I make a point of not buying any chicken more than 1.5kg and I get a puzzled look. Smaller chickens simply cook and taste much better.

Chickens are overrated any. I try not to eat chicken more than once every week or two.

There was some chicken that my missus use to buy and the texture was like jelly...the mother-in-law tried to trick me every way possible to get me to eat it with various frying and cooking techniques, but I always knew it was no good. Everyone else in the household ate it no problem.

The wife now gets some super small chickens, organic stuff and they're called something - not sure - but they're really good.

I've been eating vegetarian all week, mainly in the Indian restaurant Krishna Vilas, and only been eating once a day. It's a good way to lose some weight and enjoy it. Really like those okra dishes and Gobi 65 is something else. I could eat that all the time.

I'm not brown but isn't that a cauliflower version of Chicken 65? The latter is famous in Chennai
Likely, near the same thing, invented in 1965. Krishna Vilas does South Indian vegetarian food, so right location, if not quite the same ingredients. It's a fantastic starter.

found this guy on reddit. his dessert creations are absolutely incredible. apparently he has a show on netflix as well.
