The Fragrance Thread & SOTD

So YSL has released their Middle East lineup (ostensibly for rich Arabs) and I got to try 2 of them out tonight. The Noble Leather is fucking fantastic. The Splendid Wood is nothing to write home about.

They've also rereleased the old Tom Ford scents like Jazz and M7, but at a healthy $100 price point. Get those bottles at discount while you still can.

I forgot a few more new releases:

-Valentino has a new men's fragrance called Uomo

-Cartier has a new Declaration l'Eau

-Bond #9 had a new one called Shelter Island

Tom Ford has 3 new fragrances:
- 2 In the Italian signature line (the blue bottles like neroli portafino) called Costa Azzurra and Mandarino di'Amalfi
- A new mainline scent called Violet Orchid, which smells fantastic and like a cross between Viloet Blonde and Black Orchid.

So Rambo, you seem to have a scent rotation. What are your current choices?

Quite honestly, I've been wearing the same thing for months, save for any samples I collect and try. MFDoom MFDoom got me to buy a bottle of this Bill Blass shit, and even after giving a chunk of it away to JimmyRustler I still have a shitload left. All of my scents are in a box, along with the rest of my life.

Now, if you're looking for new scents to try, I can give some more information.

Sure, always interested in hearing more about things I know little about.

Give us somewhere to start. What do you wear now? What are you looking for in a fragrance? Night time, day time, something for the wife, etc.?

Daytime, when I get back to work in August.

I wear what my wife buys me which is usually Chanel (#5, Bleu de Chanel) and Hugo. Pretty pedestrian

YSL Noble Leather, you say? could be interesting though I've sent away most of my leathers.

You mean earthy. I'd hope for aromatic, like Capt. Black's cheap drugstore stuff, but I don't know.

hey Grand Potentate Grand Potentate , you were going to suggest some new options for a new fragrance for me
Fuck. Sorry about that I completely forgot. So, daytime. And I'm assuming you don't want something that's overpowering so as to overwhelm your patients. Or maybe you do because you're out of nitrous...

So on the non-overpowering front, we've got a few options. A classic is Acqua di Parma Colonia. Citrus, light, refreshing, and very nice. Some people prefer the Colonia Assoluta, which if I was going to describe it, would be a drier version of the original Colonia. I prefer the Colonia Intensia, because I find that the regular Colonia fades too quickly in the heat down here. You can find all of these at Sephora or any big department store of a higher grade than Macys.

Colonia:

Colonia Assoluta:

Colonia Intensia:

Another classic, that you'd probably have to buy online, is Caron The Third Man:

http://www.amazon.com/Third-Caron-Toilette-4-2-Ounce-Bottle/dp/B00152S82E

I'd describe that as classic man fragrance. Nothing too overpowering, just nice and pleasant. Cheap too.

If you're looking for something along the citrus lines, but not AdP, then I'd definitely hunt down an bottle of deadstock YSL Live Jazz, which is one of my all time favorites. Its fantastic. Note - not Jazz, but Live Jazz. The Live is the more daytime, summery version. 2nd note: Do not, under any circumstance, pay the exorbitant prices people are charging for it now. I see them on eBay upwards of $100. That's fucking insane. $30-50, tops, assuming you can find it.

On the standard department store fare, there's Aramis, which is a classic woodsy/piney scent. Or Havana by Aramis, which is a fantastic classic and one I highly recommend. Not only because its cheap:

People like JHL and New West as well, but I'm not a fan.

Dolce and Gabanna Light Blue is a classic that's loved by many. Very nice and not offensive:

There's a reason it has 85 5* reviews.

D&G also has Pour Homme, which is excellent, if not a little more on the 'out to dinner' side:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/dolce-gabbana-pour-homme-fragrance-collection-for-men?ID=16488&CategoryID=30088&LinkType=#fn=BRAND=Dolce & Gabbana;;BVLGARI;;Cartier;;Lacoste;;Prada;;Tom Ford;;Yves Saint Laurent&sp=1&spc=226

YSL has L'Homme. Another popular one that I didn't really care for:

Prada has a new ocean/water scent in Luna Rossa. Again, I didn't think it was much, but its been a huge seller:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/prada-luna-rossa-eau-de-toilette-34-oz?ID=771290&CategoryID=30088#fn=BRAND=Dolce & Gabbana;;BVLGARI;;Cartier;;Lacoste;;Prada;;Tom Ford;;Yves Saint Laurent&sp=1&spc=226

Also, an extreme version of that, but I haven't smelled it yet:

Lacoste Essential is surprisingly nice. I found it fleeting, but its a very pleasant scent. And another classic:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/lacoste-essential-fragrance-collection-for-men?ID=197745&CategoryID=30088&LinkType=#fn=BRAND=Dolce & Gabbana;;BVLGARI;;Cartier;;Lacoste;;Prada;;Tom Ford;;Yves Saint Laurent&sp=1&spc=226

Prada has a very nice light amber-y scent in L'Amber:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/prada-amber-pour-homme-mens-collection?ID=221328&CategoryID=30088&LinkType=#fn=BRAND=Dolce & Gabbana;;BVLGARI;;Cartier;;Lacoste;;Prada;;Tom Ford;;Yves Saint Laurent&sp=1&spc=226

And they also make an Intense version of that, which I think is fantastic:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/prada-amber-pour-homme-intense-cologne-for-men-collection?ID=565510&CategoryID=30088&LinkType=#fn=BRAND=Dolce & Gabbana;;BVLGARI;;Cartier;;Lacoste;;Prada;;Tom Ford;;Yves Saint Laurent&sp=1&spc=226

I'm not a big vetiver fan myself, but even I have to admit that Tom Ford's Grey Vetiver is very nice. This would be a great pickup if you like it, as its very nice yet very middle of the scent road:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/tom-ford-grey-vetiver-fragrance-collection?ID=1074620&CategoryID=30088&LinkType=#fn=BRAND=Dolce & Gabbana;;BVLGARI;;Cartier;;Lacoste;;Prada;;Tom Ford;;Yves Saint Laurent&sp=1&spc=226

Speaking of Tom Ford, he makes his eponymous fragrance, Tom Ford for Men:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/tom-ford-for-men-eau-de-toilette-spray-34-oz?ID=1066743&CategoryID=30076&zone=PDP_ZONE_A&choiceId=cidA40011-12938a49-eeb9-496d-b715-661de981caba@H7@Customers Also Shopped$30076$1066743&LinkType=PDPZ1_Pos3

And the Extreme version of this, which is in my top 5 of nightime/manly scents. Its fucking excellent:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/tom-ford-extreme-eau-de-toilette-spray-17-oz?ID=1066744&CategoryID=30088&LinkType=#fn=BRAND=Dolce & Gabbana;;BVLGARI;;Cartier;;Lacoste;;Prada;;Tom Ford;;Yves Saint Laurent&sp=1&spc=226

Cartier makes Declaration, which has been around forever, but makes me smell like an unwashed cunt:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/cartier-declaration-mens-fragrance-collection?ID=526477&CategoryID=30088&LinkType=#fn=BRAND=Dolce & Gabbana;;BVLGARI;;Cartier;;Lacoste;;Prada;;Tom Ford;;Yves Saint Laurent&sp=1&spc=226

Hanae Mori makes HiM, which I think would be a big hit with you as its right up the Chanel Bleu, Acqua de Gio set's alley. I liked this one:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/hanae-mori-him-eau-de-parfum-fragrance-collection-for-men?ID=749614&CategoryID=30076#fn=sp=1&spc=34&kws=hanae&slotId=

If you have a Nordstrom local, they have two new exclusives that are very nice. Valentino Uomo:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/valenti...m_sp=personalizedsort-_-browseresults-_-1_0_B

And Bottega Veneta Pour Homme:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/bottega...e-nordstrom-exclusive/3546995?origin=category

They also sell Hermes, which has Terre d'Hermes. This is another excellent all-around fragrance, and very popular with the ladies:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/hermes-...oilette-natural-spray/3135233?origin=category

Save for the intense versions, the Hermes, and the Tom Ford's, all of these should be under $100. A friendly reminder - don't every buy a scent over $50 without trying it first. And try it on the skin. Usually, you can find decants or small vials online either at Basenotes.net or eBay.

hey Grand Potentate Grand Potentate . wow, stellar work throwing that together. thanks. there is a Sephora in this shitty burg so they should have the AdiP. one question. what the fuck is Oud?

I have some oudh oil which was given to me by a Saudi friend a few years back. It goes on smelling like blue cheese, before it changes into an overpowering horse shit smell, until it blossoms ( I can't believe I just wrote that word about a perfume) into the very stuff I imagine heaven to smell of. Has caused spontaneous erections too, which I thought had died off in my late 20's.

I only break it out about once a year. Mrs Robert is not that keen, I'm afraid. :-(

Yep, oud is like that. Le Labo's Oud 27 comes off like scotch + spalted wood, which smells far better than it sounds

I'm curious if anyone that cares about that sort of thing agrees with the colognes mentioned in this article
http://www.splicetoday.com/consume/ten-colognes-to-try-before-you-die-or-go-crazy
It really should be entitled "10 colognes that you've definitely passed over in the mall that you should try out." And everything on that list is a favorite of one person or another. Hell, I recommended one of the Caron's.

Speaking of the list Thruth Thruth , you should add Guerlain Vetiver to the list. I forgot to include it as I'm not really a vetiver guy and that's the classic vetiver.

I will have to sniff a Vetiver 'cause I would not know one even if it bit me on my ass

Sephora sells Guerlain vetiver.

Fucking Sephora-lite in Canada AdP is available only online. Have to wait until I get to a "big" city that has a Holt-Renfrew, which physically stocks it.

yup. Sephora does have the Tom Ford in the shop. i'll start poking around

You never tried Farenheit? Go down to the drugstore toot sweet!
Nah. It has its fans, but what if I like it? Then I have to buy a bottle and wear it maybe 6 times a year. Nah. I've got to burn up or sell off more of the herd before I do that

For instance, I seldom wear Yatagan despite its prickly brilliance, Pour Monsieur despite having a jumbo bottle of the vintage stuff, untouched, Pour Un Home (though that one has a nasty connotation now), and vetiver for reasons even I can't figure out.

Knowing you it would be more like buying 6 bottles and wearing it once.

I found a place selling small bottles of Live Jazz for a decent price. I need something else to get over $60 for free shipping. Any suggestions on cheaper old classics or discontinued type things that I should have a stock of?
