The Next Election, Political News, and Other Forms of Comedy (US, UK, & Intl)

No prognostications on the mid term election day?

I like how the BBC wrote that President Trump made the mid terms all about him.

Tea party?

I'm interested in the women's vote. Whether female voters will vote en masse for female candidates. Whether female voters are motivated to vote against Republicans due to the President. I reckon youth voting & engagement will be about the same in spite of what the media says.

I know that back in the period from the 1920s to the 1980s, it used to be popular amongst some left-wingers and uni students to support the USSR and to disdain the US and the Western bloc as murdering capitalist pigs etc.

That seemed to die away for a while. Of course, there was criticism of the US (quite warranted, I think) for some of its overseas shenanigans, particularly both invasions of Iraq.

However, it now seems popular again amongst some left-wingers and uni students to support Russia and to disdain the US and the West. Such people circulate articles about how the US interferes in other countries' affairs, how such US interventions have resulted in millions of deaths, how the US sells arms to various countries, how the MSM (mainstream media) cannot be trusted and so on.

Bizarrely, however, they then talk up Russia's virtues and link to articles from Pravda.ru or RT (formerly Russia Today, the Russian government's media outlet), with apparently no consideration given to Russia's past and present behaviours and to the trustworthiness or otherwise of outlets such as Pravda and RT. It's quite bizarre...

Edited to add: What makes it even more ironic is that some of these same people also support Trump, as they consider that he is disruptive and that he will shake up the US corporate-government nexus (yes, don't get me started on how stupid that particular theory sounds) and, as a consequence, they consider that the Mueller investigation into Russian interference is a red herring, designed by the "Deep State" to bring down Trump. And where do they read articles or watch videos about that? Why, on RT or Pravda.ru, of course...

When my father was growing up, there were protests against British rule in favour of communism and socialism. Now there are protests against communism and people fly the union jack wanting British rule again. What goes around comes around. Circle of life.

Its florida. Now they're ginning up this recount shit. Of course the election was rigged. Scott's the fucking governor. What did these jamokes expect?

I know, I know. Somehow I continued to be amazed though.

well you do always say that you're not that bright.

At least I didn't vote for Rick Scott.

So apparently there's some big to do that a shitload over the Broward ballots left out the Senate votes. Like a 3% discrepancy compared to Governor votes.

Bone spurs acting up or doesn’t want to admit he still can’t work an umbrella?

Technically nationalism and jingoism caused WW1 and the imperfect/unbalanced/unfair conclusion to the losers of WW1 caused WW2.

WW1, a result of colonialism and nationalism, led to a global rise in nationalism, post-WW2 it went into decline or became ‘a dirty word’.

Well, you've also had Soros just adding a cool 18 billion into his Open Society Foundation. Nothing like a bit of his dirty money to keep the cogs well oiled and turning.

Macron and Merkel are meanwhile escalating the creation EU Army to control internal dissent and usher in the era of the new European Empire and superman ready to take on China, Russia and the USA. Looking forward to this proverbial lead zeppelin going down!

After the whole WW2 thing.
Orwell’s “Notes on Nationalism” written in the waning years of WW2

https://libcom.org/files/Notes on Nationalism - George Orwell.pdf

All three axis powers were very nationalistic—more so than any country in WWI—and used nationalism to justify their actions.

Though nationalism may not be bad in principle (I can see arguments both ways), like socialism, it is often horrendous in practice, something WW2 made very salient and a series of nationalistic dictators—again using nationalism and populism—over the latter half of the twentieth century reinforced.

In terms of whether it is inherently bad, or at least bad given the global social, economic, political, and technological environments, it depends on what form of nationalism is being discussed.

Broadly, I think a degree of “us vs them” is beneficial for a society, but the more central and influential that mindset, the more likely that society will begin to shift away from a generally shared understanding of what constitutes human decency and moral disposition.

Ojeda is officially in the 2020 race. From what little I’ve read of him, he sounds like a solid choice. If he ever gets that far. I’m sure the neo-lib centrists in the party will try to sabotage him as they did with Webb and Sanders.

France yellow vest protests: Macron promises wage rise

"So here - at the core of the address - were four simple changes. A rise in the minimum wage; the removal of tax and social charges on overtime; encouragement to employers to give workers a tax-free bonus; and an end to a surcharge on most pensions.

Plus a note of contrition, and a promise of a new 'national contract' built on electoral change and wider consultation with the provinces.

Chuck in the concessions already given - an end to the fuel tax rise and 'mobility' grants for people who drive to work - and the yellow vests suddenly appear as one of the most successful protest movements of modern times."

Four or five weekends of protests and the government caves in to all the demands? Where is the resolve and backbone to govern?
