Going to start with the worst -> best. Provide your reasoning as well.

Shall we have a go?

Thank you, based god. As an addendum, I think this needs some sort of 'bitching' attachment to it.

44. Lincoln. Most principles and goals the country was based on, a loose federation of voluntary states, states' rights, minimal governmental expenditures, a small standing army (if any)., etc. were tossed out the window by this vastly unpopular president. Sadly, revisionism has whitewashed his horrendous reign. Sic semper tyrannis!
43. Bush/Obama. Two sides of the same coin. Multiple unnecessary wars, horrid economy and unprecedented deficit spending. Obscene intrusions in civil liberties while governmental secrecy grows.

tbd
I'll rank the greats of Polk, Knox, Buchanan, Filmore, et al. later

1. Calvin Coolidge! This man knew what was up and how to get out of the way and not be a glory hound.

That's why I elisped over the "middlers" - I'd mainly like to hear people's takes on the best/worst and why - unless you just need to nail Millard Filmore into that #22 spot for whatever reason...

44: is Bush 2 by a mile. 2 fake wars? Getting kids killed based on lies? Kicking off the NSA bullshit? Choosing Dick Cheney?
43: has to be Harding. The man himself was quoted as saying "I am not fit for this office and should never have been here". He brought in cronies which plundered at will.
42: Nixon
41: Buchanan, total disaster.
40: Obama may belong here, but I'd need to read up on some historical stuff first.

I have only lived in this country since 1998, so I can't say much about the previous presidents.

I would rank Obama worse than Bush.

BO: continued the winless wars, got us into extreme economic pitfalls. In addition, racial tension has elevated at an alarming rate since BO was elected (Blacks vs. everyone else), ironically this was a senator that run on the platform of unity. Sense of entitlement and lack of responsibility are eroding this country. We are borrowing ourselves into oblivion, even our creditors (China) are warning us against frivolous spending. Our freedom is at stake and the average American is too stupid to realize that. Michelle Obama has a hard time to stay off the spot light, and I am not seeing how she has the power to initiate already failed programs such as the federal school lunch program.

Bush: the Afghan war was understandable, but the Iraq War pointless, though the Democrats did vote for it. Too much religious views interjected into politics which I dislike. Tax cuts favored the upper class, but everyone enjoyed a piece of cake. Gas prices skyrocketed under Bush's reign not due to short supply, but volatile political climate. The handling of Katrina was disastrous. Cheney was evil, and some might argue that Bush was his puppet. But at least, Bush, IMO, had balls

Besides Watergate. Nixon was a decent political figure at least in the foreign policy arena for opening doors with China and USSR. But I guess Kissinger had a lot to do with that.

You can't excuse what he did, the guy was a really dirty rat. Every pres is going to have some wins and losses, but this guy managed to get himself kicked out of office so he stays in the conversation.

Woodrow Wilson was by far the worst. Virulent racist, involved the US in a foreign war we had no business in, helped draft the treaty of Versailles which lead to Hitler and WWII, approved of the income tax, killed more American Indians than Andrew Jackson, an all around disgusting fellow.

Ya. He was a piece of shit.

Andrew Johnson was a real piece of garbage too. He got in because of Lincoln's assassination. "This is a country for white men... it shall be a government for white men". The entire '60's civil rights era could have happened almost 100 years earlier.

Fooker took us off the gold standard, so that's bottom ten in my book.
Woodrow Wilson was by far the worst.
League of Nations LOL screw that one world government shite.

Can someone explain to me why Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt are positioned as they are in this fantastic painting?

I am largely ignorant of American history. Could someone explain that picture to me (or point me to an explanation)?

eta: I mean I recognise Lincoln, Reagan, Washington, JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Bush 41, Bush 43, Obama, Carter, Clinton, and (I think), Theodore Roosevelt. I get which of them are democrats and which are republicans. I see that Obama is standing on a bit of paper I presume to be the constitution. I presume the guy on the bench represents the average american dude or something. I get that the picture must be coming from a right-wing point of view. But I feel I am missing some of the specific symbolism?
