ISIS orders female genital mutilation in Iraq

Staff Writer, Al Arabiya News
Thursday, 24 July 2014

The al-Qaeda-Inspired Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has ordered all girls and women between the ages of 11 and 46 in and around Iraq's northern city of Mosul to undergo female genital mutilation, the United Nations said on Thursday.

“It is a fatwa (or religious edict) of ISIS, we learnt this this morning,” said Jacqueline Badcock, the number two U.N. official in Iraq.

The “fatwa” would potentially affect 4 million women and girls, Badcock told reporters in Geneva by videolink from Arbil.

“This is something very new for Iraq, particularly in this area, and is of grave concern and does need to be addressed,” she said, according to Reuters.

“This is not the will of Iraqi people, or the women of Iraq in these vulnerable areas covered by the terrorists,” she added.

No one was immediately available for comment from Islamic State which has led an offensive through northern and western Iraq.

The world body has “zero contact” with ISIS, but works through tribal leaders in the affected areas, Badcock said. “I can't give you any more details until we have been on the ground to get information,” she said of the directive.

FGM, the partial or total removal of external female genitalia, is a tradition practiced widely in many countries and often justified as a means of suppressing a woman's sexual desire to prevent “immoral” behavior.

Female Genital Mutilation in U.S. sparks warnings

Worldwide, more than 130 million girls and women have undergone FGM and more than 700 million women alive today were children when they were married.

The practice of FGM previously occurred only in isolated pockets of Iraq, mainly Kurdistan, according to Badcock.

Mosul city currently has some two million people, more than half of whom are women as there are many female-headed households in the area, she said. Several more million people live in surrounding areas, she added.

“There are reports of rapes of women, of forced marriages,” Badcock added.

Wait, didn't we liberate Iraq? I could swear circumcision was used as one of the many excuses to have our soldiers killed there.

I had male genital mutilation inflicted on my foreskin at a very early age.

Even worse is that female genital mutilation is being perpetrated in North America.

I seethe every time an attempt is made - formally or informally - to normalize or defend such cultural practices.

Furthermore, I also find the attempt to insinuate Sharia law into our society by certain groups to be an affront. More maddening are the home grown fools who support this shit and who unfortunately populate human rights committees.

Well, I'm in favor of their anti-usury stance myself.
I really am not automatically in favor of cultural homogenization. And it won't happen overnight. Traditions are hard to break, especially in tightly knit groups.

As the article states, this is not an Islamic thing whatsoever. Despite what feminists claim, it is not a totally patriarchal thing. It is done by women as it was done to them. Most men are not gynecologists and really aren't too picky about the mysterious lady parts.

Since this is more of an African thing, can we move on to dry sex?

Meat has little to do with being fat. They eat too much sugar and carbs.

Carbs are sugar

themoreyouknow.gif

Dr. Oz is a fucking wanker but he is channelling the correct information. Carbohydrates have CHO groups (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen) and differ in how large the chains are. Sugars are smaller than starches or cellulose. Cellulose is huge and complex and hard to metabolize. Which is why we don't eat grass.

Yes boring I know.

Carbs alone are not to blame. North American obesity is linked to over consumption of crazy calories, fat and carbs especially with convenience foods. Fast food is cheaper than good food. There is a socioeconomic component. How else can poor people be fat?

The addition of high fructose corn syrups is another culprit. Don't get me started on farmers and corn subsidies so this useless shit can be put in all foods and fed to animals raised for our meat. Corn is not something cows should be eating.

I ain't no tree hugger but when something is messing with my meat, I get concerned.

Especially the pig. Don't fuck with my bacon. Please

John Oliver did a piece on our lack of regard, and security of, nuclear weapons. This should scare the shit out of more people

I don't completely agree. Sugar is sugar is sugar. Corn syrup is the same shit as a glass of orange juice.

The problem with sugar is that it immediately triggers insulin production and that sugar is converted directly to fat. That means obesity because there is sugar in absolutely fucking everything now. Look at supermarket shelves, its a sugar plantation.

I used to share your beliefs, but I don't anymore. When you eat fruit, the fiber in the fruit doesn't trigger this level of instant insulin production and the sugar is digested in the way you've evolved to process it.

Sugar comes with calories, but don't get the idea that its calories or exercise or anything, its sugar in all its forms. While corn subsidies lead to cheap corn syrup which leads to its cheap inclusion in food, its the sugar itself that's the problem. And yes, poor people are obese because they consume a lot more sugar than they should.

A close friend of mine is an MD, she rails on this endlessly. People need to stop differentiating sugars, all sugar is the same and is managed the same in your body. The only way to consume sugar without fat production is in fruit.

An average person should consume about 35-40g of sugar a day. That's basically 1 can of soda. That's it. Look at those pieces of shit drinking Big Gulps.

I agree and probably should have spent a little more time in my response. Eat your juice or fresh squeeze it. Intrinsic sugars in fruit as well as lactose in milk are fine when consumed in the natural state. It is the extrinsic or added sugars that kill. You are right that even "natural" juices are stepped on and added to with shit. Stuff sits in big tanks and when put in bottles/cartons has to be re-coloured.

All carbs are broken down eventually to glucose, the key small carb/sugar of metabolism, triggering insulin release......Refined carbohydrates, primarily "sugars" like sucrose, fructose etc. are more easily metabolized/fermented hence the problem - more glucose than say a boiled potato diet.

Fatties are fatties because of the intake of extrinsic sugars & high saturated fat content foodstuffs plus their choosing to eat commercially prepared convenience food, fast food and drinks.

I just texted my MD friend, she said no no no no no. Juice is no different than soda. When you squeeze, it loses all the fiber, and that's where the problem is. Perhaps sugar is added, but it doesn't change the underlying premise. Those Odwalla drinks may have vitamins, etc, but they have just as much sugar as a soda and therefore are going to make you obese just as fast as a Coke.

#1 eat your juice as in eat an orange instead of juice, that way you maximize fiber and nutrients plus minimize fructose absorption as it is bound in the fiber.

#2 However, some people for whatever reason do not like eating fruit. if you squeeze your own juice and keep pulp and fibre it is not horrible. Problem is, to get a glass of juice you would have to use more oranges than if you were to eat them. One has to be cognizant of this fact as your are increasing fructose intake. So you should not be guzzling gallons of juice you have juiced yourself. Same think as you probably should not eat a shitload or oranges per day either as there will be an increase in fructose intake.

#3 avoid commercially prepared juices. This is the problem.

The fiber retention is a fraction of what it is in the real thing. It's not going to cut it.

#4... don't drink juice.

I can agree with that. I don't drink juice for that reason but it is harder to tell people to quit something totally that to have them make informed choices to reduce intake of bad things.

Especially when 50 years of "part of this complete breakfast" has been drilled in.

Fat, lazy, stupid, gluttonous and impulsive: it all kind of goes together. Food products are not food.
On this juice thing, I get enough damned fiber. I have a tiny cup, maybe 6oz, of orange juice. I'll be fine. But then I'm not chowing down on candy bars and sucking soda and the like all day.

Please don't interpret this as being any form of apologist for the gluttons drinking big gulps. Side note, I watched this obese monstrosity of a woman buy a whole pizza a 7-11 the other day... I didn't even know that was possible. But anyway, the glut of sugar placement and advertising prays on people big time, especially kids.

When it comes to kids, for gods sake parents, stop letting them eat so much sugar. Its birthday parties, Halloween, end of school year, valentines day, then every asshole mom that makes and brings cupcakes to school because Toby just has to celebrate with his friends, just stop. You're actively addicting kids to sugar, then they can't exhibit self control as adults and look like disgusting sloven fat pigs that can't meet a girl and turn to porn. So fat the poor slob can't even see his cock anymore.

Not to change the subject too much, but unwatchable abuse of sheep by shearers in Australia, land of kindness and gentle people. They all should have their hands cut off.

I kinda doubt most shearers are punching sheep in the face. This must be frustrated newbs that don't know how to calmly hold a sheep.

Hitting a sheep in the head makes it settle down? That's odd. Seems like it would hurt the man more than the sheep too.

It took over four hours for the Berlin fire brigade to move a woman weighing 300kg (660 pounds) out of her Prenzlauer Berg apartment to be taken to hospital on Wednesday.

There is always an enabler involved with the immobilized morbidly obese. They really should be charged with something.

Obese people are a massive social drain. They even make our flights cost more because we have to fly around their lard, pay for seat-belt extensions, wheelchairs, you name it. I could probably make a case for fats responsible for global warming.

Easily. Excess food consumption, particularly meat, which is a major deforester and producer of methane and the like. Besides large highways, Americans buy big cars for their fat asses to fit into... Fatties love air conditioning....
Yes, I am not a Bloomberg ninny but the obese lead to gross inefficiencies and waste of resources.

Honestly, the amount of cop-humping bugs me more than the comedic racism.
