Bring back Tie-day Friday! Ties are indeed phallic, and open collar is emasculation!
I really need to go do research to confirm my suspicion that neckwear arose when coats (no longer dublets or tunics) began being worn unfurled leaving that vee needing filling.

The word cravat is a French form of Croat. The Croatian army fought with the French during the 30 years war in the with century. They used coloured silk neckkerchiefs as part of their uniforms, which the French later adopted.

Precisely. I believe that Roman soldiers also used to wear neckerchiefs for warmth/sweat/stop helmet chafing etc.
