Trouble in Palestine and Israel

just casually strolling through the rubble with your bike when suddenly WATCH OUT HE'S CARRYING AN RPG!!!!

"The new offer from Hamas shows the group has softened on that position and is now willing to accept an initial temporary ceasefire during which further talks would be held to extend the truce, perhaps into something permanent.

This new position is aligned with the other parties in the mediation process and notably comes after Hamas officials met with Hezbollah leaders in Lebanon earlier in the week. Qatar is said to be leaning heavily on Hamas too."

We're closer to a [temporary] ceasefire!

“'There’s no red line where I would cut off all weapons so they don’t have the Iron Dome to protect them,' he said. 'But there’s red lines where if he crosses them ... he cannot have 30,000 more Palestinians dead,' he added, referring to Netanyahu."

The red line just turned into red lines plural. Schumer yelling at Netanyahu is a red line?

"'We also see again, according to in this case the United Nations, 100% - the totality of the population - is in need of humanitarian assistance,' he added.

'Compare that to Sudan, about 80% of the population there is in need of humanitarian assistance; Afghanistan, about 70%. So, again, this only underscores both the urgency, the imperative, of making this the priority.'"

North Gaza can face famine by May. That sounds like it was pushed out another month or two.

In the poll it says 830 people in the West Bank and 750 in Gaza were interviewed. I thought we were having issues with sanitation, food and health care but apparently you can do a poll in Rafah and Khan Younis.

What happens if it passes? Do people suddenly stop firing on each other? Will a mighty United Nations battle group be raised to enforce the ceasefire?

"Her vision for the future of Gaza - now home to 2.3 million Palestinians, many of them starving - is that it will be Jewish.

'Gaza Arabs will not stay in the Gaza Strip,' she says. 'Who will stay? Jews.'"

Well I guess that's one solution.

"'Russia complained that dropping the word could allow Israel 'to resume its military operation in the Gaza Strip at any moment' after Ramadan and proposed an amendment to restore it."

So we're going to vote for ceasefire resolutions on a month to month basis? Even if Ramadan is already half finished.

'Gaza Arabs will not stay in the Gaza Strip,' she says. 'Who will stay? Jews.'"

I'm pretty sure someone on here mentioned that being the end goal of all this. Wonder who that might have been...

"Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, told reporters Monday that Austin’s planned morning meeting with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant is still on, even though Israel abruptly cancelled the visit of a high-level delegation to Washington this week."

He's going to Israel? I hope he is healthy for the trip.

"Twelve people drowned when they went into the sea to retrieve food packages, the other six were trampled to death in 'stampedes' when other aid packages landed on the ground"

What happens when the lorries are permitted through the land crossings? Stampedes and motor vehicle accidents?

"Despite the apparent effort to ease tensions, Netanyahu on Wednesday told a bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation that he had no intention of backing away from an offensive on Rafah.

'Victory is within reach. It’s a few weeks away,' he said at the event, organized by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in Jerusalem."

Someone should count how many times Netanyahu has said victory is within reach, soon, or very close.

Of course it is also hard to gauge what this victory entails: clearing out Rafah, elimination of Hamas leadership and the planners of 7th October, elimination of Hamas as a fighting force, , rescuing of all hostages, or...

awful quiet from the apologists after the intentional targeting for murder of the 7 aid workers. especially after israel came out and admitted it with a big ole' "whoopsy daisy! please send that next shipment of bombs now kthnksbye!!!!"

I really like how they claim it was "a mistake", like they are randomly bombing stuff and only find out what gets hit afterwards.

"Israel presented a plan to move 1.4 million civilians over several weeks from Rafah to tents that would be set up north of the city, the officials said. But the Israeli proposal did not include plans for addressing sanitation needs or an assessment of how much food or water would be required or where it would come from, the officials said. They said the Israeli officials had only thought through sourcing for a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of tents that would be needed.

When U.S. officials said they did not see the idea as realistic, the Israeli officials erupted, the one former and two current U.S. officials said."

They can bring the tents and food and water they're using right now. Easy. Where's the Staples button?

"Ron Dermer, Israel’s minister of strategic affairs, began yelling and waving his arms around as he defended the plan, the officials said....Two administration officials noted that it’s long been routine for Dermer to become animated during meetings with U.S. officials and described the meeting as no more contentious than other recent conversations between the two governments."

So like arguing with an Italian or Spaniard from the south.

Yes it was a mistake that the people let them know precisely where and when they'd be traveling ahead of time.

I have no desire to participate in this discussion, but I would like to point out that in the assessment of such tragic events, the Aid Worker Security Database is a very useful resource to show how much dangers aid workers face, and Palestine stands out in the worst possible way. Considering this, combined with the news reports of the past year, it becomes clear that this conflict is uniquely lethal for humantiarian aid workers.
