It looks like the old Uniqlo thread got lost. Here's the new one!

I only looked it up because I wanted to comment on how Uniqlo is filling the niche that Gap had in the late 80's to early 90's of offering decent quality stuff at affordable prices that did a great job of straddling the "young and fun" and "practical and sensible" gulf. They're not perfect, but they are much safer thatn most competition at their price range.

Owned by the Japanese, but made in China. However in terms of quality Uniqlo > Gap > H&M >>>>>> Forever 21
Actually, this crazy thread where someone knocks Uniqlo as throwaway stuff comparable to H&M got me riled up enough to start the thread.

I generally avoid Chinese-made clothing like the plaque, but Uniqlo is swift enough to use good fabrics, designs, and construction at attractive prices, so I give in.

I remembered Uniqlo craze on SF a few years ago. I have a couple of linen shirts from them which have held up well. Slim but not too tight. Besides the overly long sleeves, I have no complaints. Also their products hold well during machine wash. I would even say it's better than J. Crew and definitely Banana Republic.

Good, I'm not the only one that thinks this. I bought to length and hence basically sized down. Stuff slimmer than I'd like as a result, but it's not like I'm having the sleeves shortened or tolerating them being way too long.

I actually think Gap still does this. They're basically a poor man's J. Crew now. Some of the items are blatant ripoffs of J. Crew. I've gotten some dependable work wear from there. As a tall skinny guy, if I want reasonably priced, every day work wear, my options are J. Crew, Gap, and and Brooks Brothers XS I can find. That's about it.

Honestly, it's been a while since I set foot in a Gap. Last I recall, their product was too close to the poorer man's Gap that is Old Navy...

I stayed away for over ten years. Followed wife into one at an outlet mall a couple of years ago and was impressed (had low expectations). Nice wrinkle free dress shirts in good checks. Nice shorts too.

Another Uniqlo has opened, even closer to me. Are they doing this rate of expansion everywhere or is this just a benefit of being in the NYC metro area?

NyC. I remember there used to be a store in Jersey, but that got shut down.
I'm aware of three separate NJ locations, and now a new one. Specifically, Paramus, Bridgewater, Menlo Park (Edison) and now supposedly Wayne.
I'd assume the whole distribution and advertising thing benefits nearby clusters.
You people disgust me.
Hey, we saw that Bill Blass shirt. Don't hate the poors.

Hah. Not hating on the poors. I love that Blass shirt. It's actually exemplary of what I mean. I have never in my life (literally) set foot in a Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and whatever other nonsense middle America we think we are upscale but are really just at a different Chinese made outlet terribleness you fellows are talking about.

That Blass shirt came from mothafuckin K Mart.

Oh yeah, I'm well aware that Uniqlo is cut rate Chinese stuff. An ounce of consideration goes into the styling and design, and they get a nod for that. And their prices are not as inflated as most.

Chinese made Uniqlo > Chinese made gap, old navy, h&m, forever 21, etc. My uniqlo pieces have held up over the years through the washer/dryer.

That's like saying your broken down car > your car that's on fire.

Not the same analogy. Broken down car and car on fire both render the car inoperable.

Uniqlo offers durable basics with good quality and cut as opposed to one-wear h&m, gap, old navy, etc.

Made in China is not as awful if the prices are right.

It's "fashion" clothing, and inexpensive fashion clothing at that, so you have to judge it at that level. Most competition features crudely low stitch counts, loosely woven fabrics, boxy fits...

It's a fine analogy. One is bad, the next is worse. Being better than worse doesn't equate to good.

No, they offer copies of actual basics. Now, Old Navy is the absolute pinnacle of this and my personal nemesis after Microsoft and Apple, but the other companies are almost as bad. Related, if anyone wants to dick punch an Old Navy exec, I'll post your bail.

I could care less about made in China other than I usually avoid for personal reasons due to human rights issues. There's plenty of quality that comes from there.

It's "fashion" clothing

there. that's that

Pretty much all of my basic clothing - from t-shirts to polo shirts to boxer shorts to cotton socks to chino shorts to jeans - comes from Uniqlo. Much of my kids' casual clothing is from Uniqlo, too.

I travel to Japan once or twice a year for family reasons and we usually stock up on Uniqlo while we are there. It's a great place to get cheap, durable, comfortable clothing that is not slathered with overt branding or faux-historic slogans.

Unfortunately, I think that they've stopped making them for the time being, but Uniqlo's made-in-Japan, Japanese selvedge denim jeans were fantastic quality and they only cost the equivalent of $70.

I've also got some OCBD shirts in plain blue and a blue-and-white university stripe with unfused collars that are fantastic and which have lasted me for six or seven years. They've been washed and worn so many times that they've become so soft I could use them as pyjamas. Unfortunately, whilst the newer OCBD shirts still look like decent quality (and all for $20 per shirt), the length of the collar points has shrunk, as is the trend nowadays, so that they don't have such a lovely roll to the collar anymore.

Uniqlo also did a great, cashmere-cotton half-zip sweater in winter a few years back that looks really nice when layered under a jacket.

Those are made from Japanese selvedge denim, but they're made in (from memory) Bangladesh or Pakistan, not Japan.

Unfortunately, they haven't had any made-in-Japan denim for the past year or two. The fit of the non-made-in-Japan ones isn't the same as the old made-in-Japan ones, either - the old ones fit me really well but the newer, non-MIJ ones just aren't as good.

I'd like to thank this thread for helping me with today's crossword. 5 Letter word for Banana Republic competitor. "J Crew".

I bit the bullet and bought a Uniqlo OCBD not too long ago, it's not bad. Though I have to confess, I need another OCBD like I need another hole in my ass. But it's nice to have in the closet on the occasion my other 29 OCBDs are all waiting to be washed.

Pauly Chase Pauly Chase You ever tried their denim? They've got an interesting looking collab pair with PBJ and it says its a loose fit:

http://www.uniqlo.com/us/product/me...142526.html#69|/men/bottoms/jeans/pure-blue/|
I am interested on that. Any advice? I was in Uniqlo Londona and the raws were at GBP35.00 a pop. I only dont know if they are unsanforized/sanforized. (I don't see the point of buying sanforized raw denim)

The Uniqlo OCBD are okay but for the same price I prefer Muji (bar the tiny collar)

They also had a lot of cashmere ( I think at GBP 80,00 per jumper)

I actually ordered a pair of pants from uniqlo.com to test the accuracy of their online measurements. If they are accurate, I might order a pair of the pbj collabs. I wonder if they will be made in China or Japan

I'm not sure about the Pure Blue x Uniqlo jeans, but at present, all of Uniqlo's other jeans are made in the subcontinent (Pakistan, maybe?).

They used to make Japanese selvedge denim jeans in Japan, but I don't think that any of their denim is made in Japan at present, which is a pity.
