What happened today that neither pissed you off nor made you happy but is nevertheless noteworthy?

I’m on board with more protein and fewer carbs, but this seems extreme. Plus that fat intake cannot be good for you!

I just realised my boss is one of the last ones to leave the bar. Really not good he hired me.

I have to confess that European women in my industry keep good care of themselves. The French, Italian and Spanish ones I saw had stylish dresses or skirts (with hose!) accented with silk scarves and an appropriate amount of accessories. Maybe it had something to do with the LV hand bag but the French director smelt amazing even after a whole day conference and subsequent dinner.

Now I go back to my casual dress code office in some town in Canada....

I gave my cousin tickets to a culinary event where you can bring your own bottle of wine. After she received the gift I asked her if the date of the event was agreeable and if she was amenable to bringing her own bottle and if her husband could drive in from his place of work and accompany her. When I told her she would enjoy it and please fill me in as I have never tried it, she offered in front of her spouse to ditch him and go with me instead. I feel sorry for that man.

Good work fwiffo. Rub salt into his wound by being humble, self effacing and offer him a 6 pack of crap beer and the TV guide.

I am still committed to marital happiness for my cousin. Last year for her birthday I picked a French bistro in a gentrifying area of the city and she had her husband drop her off, drive 40km home and asked him to pick her up afterwards. Suffice to say I paid for her Uber. You would assume there are some indignities that a person shouldn't accept but maybe that's why I am unmarried.

Do people there drive their healthy teenagers to school?

When I was young , even when my kids were young, I didn’t know anyone who drove kids to school, except occasionally or if en route to work. Now there are traffic jams around school drop off and pick up.

It's a different world now.....massive traffic jams at the primary school of my kids. That's why I would ensure we were always 15mins too early. The eldest is at secondary school now and it's right by my work and there's issues now with the travel. And so she has two bikes, one located at my work. Would have preferred the local school, 5mins on a bike, was chosen. But no it had to be this specific school for English language and the highest segregation from the masses based on 11+ type exam. Now the youngest doesn't appear at the same level by several grades, so now there's expensive IQ tests underway....

In my mid to late 40s, I’m about to go skiing for the first time. May book a private lesson with my eight and five year old kids.

Are you going up a hill or just the magic carpet?

I taught my father how to ski when he was in his 50s.

I skied in Lake Tahoe - Heavenly, Sierra, plus a day at Squaw Valley and a couple at Kirkwood.

Stayed in cheap motel. Big buffets in casinos reminded me of a Dom Jolly sketch where a line of fat people are queuing outside an all-you-can-eat with plates the size of dustbin lids.

My in-laws have a house near Heavenly. We go there each year - though this will be a first for skiing. I know that Harrah’s buffet all to well. It’s insanely cheap if you have a local address.

How did your dad do?

Well in one morning he learnt to go up the magic carpet, fall, get up, go down the kids' hill and stop. Having no prior winter sport experience in your 50s and being taught by a complete amateur I would say that's pretty good.

Yes and the other casinos offer similar deals which seemed cheap I did not realise locals got an even cheaper deal. Never been to an American casino before. So not used to seeing lots of pensioners with big buckets of coins feeding slot machines and for some reason I thought the entertainers would be in the gambling area - and free -rather than in a separate concert hall. So I never did see Carrot Top, whoever he is.Thought about Reno for skiing. Fly direct instead of San Francisco and then a car trip; but Lake Tahoe was a good base and there would still be a trip from Reno to the nearest ski resorts which would be smaller.

Skiing in Reno? I thought it was in the dessert? We fly into Reno and drive up, through Carson City.

Tahoe is nice in the summer, but too many tourists. I don’t go in the summer anymore (though that’s also because the in-laws spend summer in that house).

I just walked into a Serbian restaurant and I assure you I am the only bloke here besides 2 people at the bar, the staff, the one family at a long table and a couple who doesn't speak Serbian. I guess I have balls.

Yell out Croatia Forever and see what happens. Report back.

I just walked by a 3 car accident. A man was running with a blanket for someone injured. Debris was scattered across the road and sidewalk. People were calling 911. People were screaming whether anyone saw everything, whether anyone was a doctor or nurse. And all I could think was how I was going to get around that debris so I can get to the restaurant and buy takeaway to meet the 1700 early dinner time my brother requested.

That's something I realized about myself. If I have something I am fully committed to and convinced I need to do I zero in on it. Whether it's escorting someone through a crowd to the airport. Flag down Uber and get to a destination. Deliver something. I turn into this mode where I am only concerned about the task at hand and I block everything else. One of my ex lady friends said I'm in my mission mode.

At the village where my job is I eat 3 times a week at this restaurant in the same plaza - usually my dry days. The waitress finally asked me why I don't cook at home and I explained my situation with the stipend, Airbnb, that I go home on Fridays and the weekend to the city. She said it was expensive I spent 1000/month. She rents her basement for 450/month. She then said she will find a room for me for 400/month.

This morning I got dropped off by an Uber driver who said he drove me 30km away to get a direct train back to the city. I keep getting the same Uber drivers here. One driver has taken me 5 times to different Airbnbs.

I have a watering hole where I know all four female bartenders and most waitresses. Every time I walk in I get "Hey fwiffo" "Hello fwiffo" a few times before I get from the hostess to the bar. It hasn't got to the point where I just sit down and people pour me a drink but it's getting there. Today one of my favourite bartenders said God she was hungry and I asked whether that's a sign I should order some food so she can eat off my plate. She said it's getting there.

I guess I'm getting acclimated to my village.

A week in Virginia and the humidity has put my eczema on the mend.

Have you found any topical solutions that actually work?

Cortisone and corticosteroids work like a charm but I can't exactly use those all the time given I'm not exactly sure I have a healthy kidney and liver. I've had this since I was a baby. Keep everything moisturized or humidified and it goes away after the 3 months of winter we get. If I lived where you live I would never have this issue. Maybe it has something to do with my family's tropical equator roots.

Of course I would have to deal with bigger and more frequent roaches so who knows.
