This is important enough that it deserved its own discussion.

I've actually had something similar done for a medical procedure, and its just as uncomfortable as it looks.

I honestly don't know, but is there any difference between this and the standard operating procedure for any prison in which a detainee refuses to eat and nourish his/her body for extended periods of time? I wouldn't think they allow people to starve themselves to death either.

I doubt it. The thing here is the scale. There's, what, 150+ people now?

I'll preface with my general distaste for celebrity stances on various topics.

That said, this doesn't look like a pleasant procedure. But echoing Lonestar, what are you supposed to do in this situation?

As long as you clearly document that you're offering people enough food to be life sustaining, should you really care if they don't eat it? How could it be a human rights violation if you provide all of the necessities of life, and a prisoner willingly doesn't take them? I don't think the prison should be held responsible for the exercising of free will by a prisoner.

Scale to what? Amount of people starving themselves versus other prisons? Are there 150+ people starving themselves there? I agree that's a large number if true.

Still what are they supposed to do? Let them starve themselves to death? That in itself would be a human right violation. Seems like they don't have any other answers here.

Isn't that their right? Hate to be all politic about it, but their human rights went out the window the minute they were places in Guantanamo.

volunteering to have a tube snaked up your nasal cavity hardly qualifies as a celebrity stance, does it?

Being Mos Def, it does. As well as the implications of being a practicing Muslim. All subliminal.

Don't conflate that with my approval of the practice.

Although limiting one's liability is standard procedure in just about anything on the planet... Don't want people dying on your watch.

There is nothing subliminal about it. They chose a public figure to publicize their public opinion with the hopes of swaying the public's point-of-view... publicly, so they'd get the most publicity.

Then what was the point of the video in the first place?

So we'd know the difference.

Don't worry, I'm not. As to the celebrity angle, I know why they chose him. Im just saying that subjecting yourself to such shit puts you a step beyond the normal 'celebrity' angle.

stupid video

Why do you say that? Obviously, they were clearly angling for their own position. But its good to at least see what its like and know what these bastards are going through every day.

Sometimes I wonder - is it even necessary to consider "what they go through every day"? I mean, I think a great degree of security in culture generally is achieved by separating the bad from the good in various forms; having people who do the dirty work who don't allow the genpop. to know what's up.

Maybe a bit of ignorance is bliss when it comes to sensitive subjects.
