What style suit does Maxwell Smart wear?

As I child my eye was caught by the oddly slim cut suits worn by Don Adams on Get Smart. The short side vents even registered as unusual.

Recently I caught a few episodes and am now as confused as ever. At some stretch, he was wearing these four button coats with side vents and flapped chest pocket. The shoulder seems fairly natural. Was this a unique style or was this somewhat common or trendy?

I had posted an answer or so I thought with pics. Seems to have disappeared. Oh well. Early on the costume designer was Ron Postal of Beverly Hills, who did men's and women's custom. Later suits were credited to Botany 500.

There is not a ton of info on Postal. But he did Steve McQueen's wardrobe for the Thomas Crown Affair.

I'm mesmerized by the pattern orientation on the collar and lapel here. If that collar is one piece, that has to be some really tricky work.
