Your top three tie brands

If I had to limit myself to three tie brands:

Sam Hober
Drakes
Panta
(in no order)

This is probably a reflection of my tastes; there are certain patterns, such as those that I associate with Marinella and Cappelli, that I don't really wear.

I'd never heard of Mountain & Sackett until this thread; I went to their website and within half a minute had seen 7-8 ties that I'm very interested (and 3 or 4 that I'll actually buy in the next couple of months).

I tried E & G Cappelli recently and was blown away. Really really nice. Funny how similar silk can look so english in the hands of Drake's and so Italian in the hands of Cappelli.

I'd go -

Cappelli
Drakes
Hober

You guys wear ties way more than I do.

I have a nice small collection (5-6) of RLBL ties that I love. I think I have one knit tie from Brooks Brothers. That's about it. Oh. And my Armani tie I received from my Secret Santa, whiteslashasian

Hey who said we wear them? I just keep them in a box to look at and stroke.

I can definitely vouch for Ed's Panta ties. I picked up a few for Secret Santa this year and they were very impressive. Excellent materials, feel, and the construction looked really nice.

Caveat: I neither own a tie, nor have ever worn one, so this is most definitely not my department. Take all information with a full shaker of salt.

I used to like RLBL ties - probably when I mistakenly thought I was a good fit for RLBL suits. Lately the best tying tie is Drake's for me. I had some seven fold from Kent Wang but I can't say all of them have been very good. There was one that shipped to me with an indentation or permanent crease. I haven't tried Sam Hober yet but that was also an option.

I wear a tie five days a week. Sometimes I wear a tie on one of the weekends (Easter, special birthdays and events).

Five years after I experimented with 2-3" ties plenty of financial district men in Toronto are now sporting it. And the quality they buy shows. Flopping in the air with no weight or horrific knots that I think are because you spent $12 for it at Zara.

GET. A. HOBER. TIE.

NOW

Also, did you talk to KW about the problem? I had an issue with one of his ties and he replaced it without any hassle.

I have a bajillion ties and not a single print among them. They just don't do it for me, which is a shame as they seem like they are very versatile ties. Stuff like these:

Could work in a lot of contexts. Damnit. I think I just sold myself on prints. Damnit.

I'm more comfortable with regs/repps (I have both) than prints. Balance has been restored....I no longer want the prints, though I like the ones you posted more than the ones I posted (I just pulled pictures from Hober). I guess prints seem older? Hopefully it is a silly bias that will change, because I can't help but feel I'm missing out on a lot of great ties.

Perhaps they want to avoid a particular association (as far as Moore and PoW)?

I thought prints were...well...any sort of non striped dying/coloring done on the silk fabric itself as opposed to the threads/fibers (which would later be woven).

Yeah....I wouldn't go so far as to say old-mannish. But maybe 30+

I'd go with Marinella, Hober and probably Drakes. There are others I'm probably not thinking of but all of those are really solid.

Well I did say they felt a bit "old." Ties shouldn't be exciting...they should be elegant.

I would sex most of those ties. I own the red/blue panta. Excellent taste in ties for someone who doesn't wear them.

Of those you put up, I'd wear all the Panta and the Drakes light blue quite often and the two checks occasionally (I don't own any shepherd check so I'm not sure quite how to wear them). The madder is the only one I wouldn't wear.

Thank you kind sir. My clothing taste is world renown. Sadly, underutilized though.

Well James Bond was an officer in the Navy and Prince Charles was Colonel in Chief of the Black Watch, so they're both allowed to wear the ties. Can't explain why the stripes are going the other way.

I suppose it's possible that they are wearing American tie brands...but then the question is: why?

Yes I understand that American ties go the other way, it's just as Chorn says, why would Prince C and J.B. (both meant to be thoroughly British dressers) be wearing the US version rather than the English?

I guess in the Roger Moore pic we could put it down to American costume designers on an American film filmed in the US (think that particular scene is in NYC). But Prince Charles is a bit of a mystery. I doubt he would have done it unknowingly.

I have a doctor friend that wears them, he says it helps bedside manner. Patients are more comfortable around him when he's wearing something whimsical.

Personally, a wardrobe with all soporifics and strips et al is a bit drab.

The thing about knit ties that I dislike is that the width is the same for the entire length of the tie. It just seems like a weird stripe down the middle. I prefer grenadines because you can get some of the same texture and still have a tie that gets progressively wider. My two cents.

Howard Yount is probably your best bet then. I'm wearing one now. Pointed end and not all the same width.

Howard Yount is the place to go then. I have four knits from him (and I think seven total). Very reasonably priced.
