No one ever that conscious of class, distinguishing oneself from the herd through lavish displays of wealth is that unaware that the watch they're buying is merely a time piece comparable to more cost effective models. You don't sport a Daytona and suddenly regret that oh shit, a Swatch Watch does the same. Because it doesn't on several measures.
But it is quite possible and definitely not inconceivable, depending on mindset and circumstance that a cost effective watch can deliver a bigger buzz than one costing several hundreds times more. Case in point: a Seiko 5.
They need to do another salmon and copper face. Then I'm definitely in!

Don't think that line ever came with a salmon dial. You can still get the black, khaki and blue dials on Amazon for dirt cheap, even though the line was discontinued in favour of a larger, more expensive version by Seiko.

I think some people dislike Hodinkee intensely for a few reasons:
- It's virtually always positive - I actually can't remember reading a negative, or critical, review of a watch on the site;
- Since it introduced the Hodinkee shop, it has a lot of articles about the watches it sells in the shop and so, clearly, it's not a neutral party - this has made it even less likely to have negative, or critical, articles; and
- It's probably been one of the big drivers in pushing "collecting" watches as a hobby.
I think that, for a lot of people who criticise Hodinkee, the third point is the most egregious for them, as it's broadened the appeal of watches and now many people who didn't care about watches just a few years back are now frantically trying to buy a Rolex Sub, or Omega "Snoopy". So in broadening the hobby, it's brought in a whole lot of people who are (rightly or wrongly) perceived to be buying watches simply because it's now the cool thing to do, rather than actually liking watches or knowing much about watches (apart from what they read on Hodinkee...).

They also drive up prices through their store being incredibly over priced, like over 100% over value a lot of the time.

I hadn't really noticed that, but I must admit that I do like the way that Hodinkee lists items - lots of photos and a list of "pros and cons" that highlight details such as a chip in the bezel. Better than most vintage/used watch retailers. However, their collaboration with Crown & Calibre (now owned by Hodinkee) isn't nearly as good - scant details and only a few photos for most watches.
Also, basically any older/vintage watch that Hodinkee features in articles shoots up in price as a consequence - I'm sure that pisses off people who were hoping to find a good deal.

Just got the Seiko King Turtle, not quite the LX, but for €600 it's a difficult tool watch to beat:
Edit: the chapter ring is slightly off. Not enough for Seiko at that price range to consider out of tolerance, but I will get it fixed.

About 2 months. It had a new crystal as well as routine service. It was done in the US by Govberg I believe but I'm not positive. Govberg arranged it at any rate.

In other news, over on SF, the inimitable Foo was telling everyone about how he got an amazing Patek Philippe watch that cost something like US$80,000. He got it for this 40th birthday, and was talking about it on SF for months before he got it - analysing the numerals, the hands, wondering what colour strap he should put it on, where he should get the strap and so on. Then, when he got it, he spent several days posting photos of him wearing it around the place.
Of course, being the Foo, the watch had to be one of the greatest, most authentic PP models ever - he had to convince everyone it was the ne plus ultra of PP watches.
Also, of course, being the Foo, something had to be wrong with it - after a few days of apparent bliss, he showed it to someone at his local Patek dealer. The person looked at the watch under a loupe or magnifying glass and noticed that the side of the case looked to be very slightly "wavy".
Naturally, being the Foo, now that he nows about this minor imperfection that is seemingly invisible to the naked eye, he can't let it go and is petitioning Patek Philippe to replace the watch case. He's even tried writing directly to the CEO of PP, Thierry Sterne, but for some reason I simply cannot fathom, has not received a response...

Beautiful watch, looks far nicer in person than in the photos, perfect size and not as gaudy as the awful Nautilis. Can you actually buy one or is this one of the watches where they laugh at you for having the audacity to ask for it while calling security?

They’ll never tell you what they had to do—but theoretically not even Patek itself should be able to tell that any work was done. Any new Patek at an AD may or may not have undergone this process.
Anyway, it took months to complete the return to stock work. Then there was an issue wiring our payment and we didn’t want to risk trying again. Since Weir doesn’t take credit card payments over the phone, my wife flew to Dublin last week just to pick-up the watch! She flew in on a red eye, went into the city for four hours, then went back to the airport. True love

I actually feel sorry for him, in a way, although that my be entirely misplaced.
Maybe he's a happy person, but he never seems satisfied. He always needs to have "the best" (in whatever way he decides it's the best exemplar of something) and so he always seems to be searching, searching and then, once he gets it, it almost never lives up to the standard he set for it (gloves, bespoke shoes, trousers and so on).
