HOW CAN ONE MAN DEFINE EXCELLENCE ACROSS CM & SWD?

OPERA MAN

Styleforum, the only place where young men suddenly take an interest in the Opera so they can wear formal wear amongst a bunch of blokes in jeans and sneakers.

I firmly believe this is the most helpful thread on the whole site. Just sayin'.
Yessir! I came here to assist with punching holes in the ridiculous bloated pompous elements that creep in.
I think I read the phrase on here that it's all about 'young men trying to dress like Toad of Toad Hall' which always makes me chuckle when get it comes to mind.

Thanks - just a note on the waistcoat worn with strollers - always same as coat, which means black including at weddings. If you wear odd waistcoats, you are not only incorrect, but will be taken for a high class hotel employee!

I don't know but he's talking/typing out of his ass. Buff or dove grey waistcoat is absolutely correct with a stroller and (despite it being outdated to the point of near anachronism) IMO looks much better and less funereal. Also better without clown striped pants.

Interesting - I hadn't heard that before, but I certainly think that the British royal family would tend to disagree.

The stroller (USA) Stressman (EU) essentially the lounge suit /"modern" version of the morning coat outfit. It also devolved into the clerical workers city uniform in UK (or possibly more correctly London). As a white collar worker a buff vest would certainly be a bit over the top but as a version of the morning suit its not any problem.

Its a bit of a mystery as to why the stroller didn't remain more popular as its a more versatile modernisation of formal wear and in my not so humble makes a good substitute for morning dress and the dinner suit.

Exactly so - and great use of pics from "Are You Being Served?" to illustrate your point.

I would have thought that the precise opposite of Butler's point would apply - if you wore a black waistcoat and black jacket, you'd look like a hotel or department store clerk, whereas if you wore a buff, grey or pale blue vest, you'd look like you were off to Ascot for the races or to a nice garden party or wedding.

That's kind of my thinking but I'd also take some notice of Butler - I think he's from "olde" english stock and mixes in circles in UK & EU more inclined to wear formal clothing. But like a lot of "rules" there's many different/contradictory rules in different circles. To some extent the rules need to be absorbed, thought about and considered. If breaking them seems to be tasteful, appropriate and personally workable then after some consideration one can ignore the rule.

That said - to go back to the original issue of someone from SF wearing stroller to the opera (in SFX?) - I doubt many people, even sticklers for protocol, and opera goers, would know what a stroller is - let alone the rules. I have never seen anyone in real life wearing a stroller. (That's not a great argument but I do get around a bit in Melbourne, I'm an infrequent attendee at opera and ballet (ugh) and classical concerts and the odd rare attendance at "proper" Melbourne Clubs).

As I said before - at least in theory - I see a the black lounge coat, grey or striped spongebag trousers and white shirt and vest (or sans vest) al la Capt. Peacock - a great idea. One that can bridge the gap between the lounge suit and old style formal wear - but I'm not about to get one. And I'm not sure I 'd want to be the only person in Melbourne to own and wear one.

Although when you think about it - if the trousers are plain grey or flannel with a Navy blazer and white shirt - that's only one step away from a black jacket in the stroller mode. At one stage there were a lot of Black Blazers around. Not sure I see many these days. Put black buttons on a black blazer, wear a white shirt and black tie with white stripe, and grey trousers and you are bloody close to a stroller. Add a black vest or buff vest - at night and bingo - there you are - formal!. All with stuff that - perhaps aside from the vest - is wearable in other combos and to daily work even.

I don't think this is that bad. The jeans are cut wrong for a man with no quads, and the vest is very East Coast. But this passes muster for me.
I don't like tailored jackets with jeans**. The vest doesn't look right. I don't like loafers with jeans - but others do. White pocket hankie with jeans???!!!!!

OTOH he looks presentable. Neat. Tidy. Not offensive. Better than most in the street. Not sure that's high praise.

** I can almost approve a heavy proper tweed jacket with jeans or a brown sloppy cord tailored jacket.
I know a lot of people like the jacket and jeans look. I'm not sure how much its just a personal thing but with jeans I always wear a casual non tailored jacket, - say, Blouson, Harrington, Cord Truckers jacket, Pea coat, Field coats, Car Coat /Parka type, Barn jacket etc etc and boots of some kind - boots, chukkas, DBs -

I believe he's Danish. Like the pastry.

Mr Gustav Stresemann might have had a stressy job, but still he is unhappy about the rape of his surname...

I did not wish to insult Herr Stresemann.

I was mispeld from reading to much sarto and tackies.

The proper Stresemann outfit:

But why bother? Just wear your trusted old tuxedo (the one with the dark purple silk facings).
For a formal event wear socks and loafers, for an informal one skip the socks.
Or just wear what I always wear:
