The Wonderful World of Oz

Malcolm has just challenged Abbott. Vote tonight. Live on abc TV now. Waiting on Sloppy Joe Hockey to make an announcement. The big goose.

Malcolm has just challenged Abbott.

Yep, apparently Deputy PM Julie Bishop put the hard word on Abbott at the end of parliamentary proceedings today. Some networks are reporting that Scott Morrison supports Turnbull (which, if true, would be a coup for Turnbull), others say that he's supporting Abbott.

Either way, Abbott seems determined to have the vote tonight, rather than leaving things to fester.

Small note for our merkin frjends: in Australia the Liberal Party are the conservatives.

The ALP just lost the next election. The question is, will Shorten go before or after the general election.

To make an analogy the seppos will understand - the Labor Party are very much like the Democrats, whereas the Liberals are like the Democrats.

Heheh, the new PM is a Republican and an economic liberal, though not terribly conservative socially.

Politically, I'd say he is closer to the right of the U.S. Dems than the Republican Party.

What Americans call a dangerous left of centre socialist we would call a rabid right winger.

An astonishing chapter of Australian history that I never knew existed - the Emu War of 1932, where heavily armed soldiers with machine guns were sent to fight marauding flocks of emus in rural West Australia:

If the Wikipedia article wasn't backed up by archived articles from reputable Australian newspapers, I'd think it was a hoax.

Not quite in Australia, but a story featuring a foolish Australian man:

Mob threatened to ‘skin man’s leg’ over tattoo

TL/DR version - Australian man gets tattoo of Hindu goddess on lower leg, gets harassed by conservative Indians in India, who threaten to "skin his leg" because of his tattoo. He then claims that he was discriminated against and that his freedom was infringed.

I really find it amazing that there are some people who are so naive that they seem to think that other countries are just like their own and that they can enjoy the same freedoms in other countries as they can in their own. Was it right that he was threatened because of his tattoo? No. Should he have been much, much more careful and checked to see whether his tattoo might offend people? Yes, yes he should have. Is he a foolishly naive, overly-entitled git? Yes, yes he is.

Hmmm... maybe I should put this in the "stories that make you lost your faith in humanity" thread...

Well the Stocco's have been caught and by the looks of things the cops have given them a good old fashion flogging, bound to happen if you shoot at their colleagues

Yeah roos everywhere around where i live (country area). I don't need one of those though I have a 2 tonne 4wd with a bull bar.... only really a nuisance at dusk and dawn which is pretty much the only time I'm going fishing usually.

This conversation reminds me of when a friend of mine was driving across the Nullarbor Plain (a wide, flat, largely featureless expanse that stretches across part of southern Australia) some years back.

The road across the Nullarbor is perfectly straight for long sections and so you can see many kilometres ahead. As a result, my friend, who was driving a large V8, opened the car up and was driving at between 160 - 180km/hr (100 - 112 mph). After a while, he saw something on the road in the distance. It didn't look very large at first but it grew in size as he got closer to it and, at 180km/hr, you get closer to things pretty quickly.

He soon realised that it was an emu, a large, flightless bird about the size of an ostrich, and that it was running directly towards him along the highway. An emu usually runs at about 40km/hr (25mph) so, even though my friend was slowing down, they had a combined speed of about 140km/hr when the emu collided head-on with my friend's car.

The emu basically disintegrated into a mass of blood, guts and feathers when it hit his car and that the mess covered the grille, bonnet, windscreen and part of the roof of his car. He was able to clean the windscreen but couldn't clean the rest of the car until he reached a little township, which took him another hour or two. By that time, the whole mess had dried and set hard and it took a lot of scrubbing to clean it all off. He said that his car looked like something out of a horror movie.

I'm about the only person I know who hasn't crashed into a roo in all my years/ks of driving.

The Leland Brothers wouldn't drive to the local servo without a roo bar and a snorkel on their Landy!

For FXH,

I was driving along the Great Ocean Road from Wye River and this dog run all the way on the side of the road alongside the car until l got to my destination at Kennett River (a beach house where l stay). The dog hung around in the backyard for days. It was really strange. He run with the car for over 3 miles and kept up.

Btw, the road is a high road on cliff with the beach down the cliff.

The ALP just lost the next election. The question is, will Shorten go before or after the general election.

He'll have to go. He is the worst politician in Australian history. The polls for him will get worse and worse and the ALP will pull a last minute attempt to claw back support by voting to change leaders. It shows you that for people like that to be in charge of a party, it shows you the amount of rabble we have in politics for that to happen....that would have never happened once.

Btw, here is a good representation of how dumb aussie politicians really are. A great 1 minute video. Btw, Ricky is a poo throwing ute driving petrol head bogan...ie, one of the great unwashed, and got his first suit when he got into politics.

In what has come as devastating news to a young business owner and the six staff they employ, it appears a brand new café has been lost amongst Melbourne’s iconic laneways. It has only been open for two days, but ‘GRAIN’ has received glowing reviews on it’s coffee, food and atmosphere…. but now its location is getting one star.

“I’m understandably upset.” says cafe owner, Marc O’Poloh. “My wife and I have been up and down all the laneways we think it’s in and we ended up getting so confused we had to tie string to each other to find our way back to the car. I’ve also had my chef have a go at looking, but he smokes so much weed he can barely remember where he lives; he’s actually been staying at my house.”

Mr O’Poloh has now put a call out to any patrons or reviewers that might have visited in the last few days in an effort to try and track down the premises. He’s also desperate to locate the shop due to the fact their chef can’t remember if he turned the gas off or not.

Victoria Police are unable to help as you can’t technically report a business entity ‘missing’ like a person.

“This is definitely the most bizarre case we’ve had in some time”, says Senior Sgt Barry Sawine from Victoria Police’s Missing Persons Unit. “We’ve allocated a couple of resources to assist in the search but it’s like a fucking labyrinth in there, and I’m not referring to the David Bowie exhibit. Hahaha.” Sergeant Sawine’s face drops from manic laughter to grim terror, “But seriously, we’ve already reported three officers missing this year because of Melbourne’s laneways. People should always let a loved one know if they’re going to look at graffiti or have a long macchiato down one of those colourful concrete tubes.”

Mr O’Poloh fails to see the funny side of it all. He contends with each day the café remains closed, he loses a few thousand dollars.

Yes some of those venues in Melbourne laneways can be hard to find, especially at night. That's why l love them.

Look at the picture above the yellow bin in that circle.
