I like hats like that in concept. I rarely like them when I see them worn, particularly by younger people (including myself in that). It just seems so affected. A shame because they are utilitarian, particularly for a bald bastard like myself.

Problem is that the people who post hat fits on menswear forums are not doing hats a service. They usually come across - as you say - as affected. Worse, they look like they are wearing their costume home from the Schenectady Community Theatre production of Guys and Dolls.

Yeah, that's what I'm struggling with as well. I really have to start wearing something on my head come next summer. However, a ball cap just looks silly with the way I dress, as do those flat brim new era ones, and none of the other hat styles are really socially acceptable. A panama just looks so affected, unless you're 65+, but it would go best with the way I dress.

I think for your self-preservation you just do it and own the look.

Maybe it is overkill but I will need them regardless for mountaineering, hence the top of the line pair. I plan to do Denali and/or a 7k peak next year so figure it would not go to waste.

I generally don't like down pants for high mountains, I would go straight for a suit.

I have this for the winter, autumn. I'll wear various watch caps as needed for real cold. If it is cold enough for it to matter style is taking a backseat in a big way to my fucking ears not feeling like they are going to fall off.
I could use a linen flat cap for summer, but I am not inclined to take the plunge to a proper hat with a brim just yet.

Dammit, I can't jump start the hat thread, but this takes off.
Given that I've lost a summer hat two years in a row, and my extreme distrust of straw having any durability whatsoever, I'm looking for cheap. I want knockaround, and I can't be guarding a hat like it's a Faberge egg when I take it off. Also, I want a warm weather far for light rain.
I will say that hats, like bow ties, ascots, braces etc. are something that should be worn with no fanfare. If one dons them with an air of "oh look how precious and twee I am" or "haha, I am an olde-tyme dandy!" it will show...poorly. Toss it on like it's jsut another old thing and it will work better.

This is just it. When you grab some one-size-fits all disposable from a department store, it will look half-assed. But there is almost no middle ground between the $12 Chinese-made hat at Target and some $250+ Borsalino or whatever anymore . It's a damned shame.
Hats are always functional for me. If it's not rainy or cold or I'm not out in the sun for hours, I don't bother. I'm certainly not some douche in a t-shirt and a vest wearing a porkpie and sunglasses indoors.

Yeah I'll eventually order a Lock & Co cap even though I'm not fully convinced of the designs I'm looking at.
