Is Manton the Anti-iGent?

He was the first igent.

He is histrionic-narcissistic, ignorant but pedant, his suits are three sizes bigger, looks ridicule and his book is crap.

As dessert, asked for my ban.

A true asstroll.

Man porn for you fanbois.

what a damn tacky.

Anyone who thinks clothing make the man (and I don't mean in this sense: Social Psychological and Personality Science )is a hemorrhoid. Any hashtag with "gent" or "gentleman" raises my hackles. That people believe that clothing conveys some sort of moral superiority is more ridiculous than the act of floating maintaining virginity.

Yeah, pretty much everywhere on SF. I haven't browsed waywn in over a month now. It's getting pretty boring.
I'm pretty sure the stilted highfalutin mannered talk is worst at AAAC. Let me head over there for a random example
Well, that was easy.
Good Afternoon All,

I am a long time lurker but this is my first post -- so please be kind! I always enjoy coming here to learn more and more as I expand my suit wardrobe. Question:... I apologize in advance if this has been covered before and I missed it.

Thanks in advance for your time and wisdom!

Long Time Lurker -- First Time Poster -- Canali Suit Question

Actual quote from the London Lounge.

But the one that threw me off was the definition by Harry Hart of oxfords as shoes with open lacing. Seriously?

Misidentifying shoes?! :challengedenied:

I wonder if the poster merely fainted or had full on stroke.

As a relatively newly minted iGent (by Claghorn's definition, anyway), I found myself engrossed in this community when I simply was tired of looking for quality clothing in the barren wasteland that is the American department store. Trying to obtain advice on tailoring or outfit combinations from a bored clerk who is just trying to make his or her 5% commission was getting old, fast. Magazines like GQ and Esquire just seemed like self-interested ads peppered with worthless articles comprised of shitty writing and theory. So what did I do? I went on the interweb and Googled "best men's shoes," and the rest was history.

I also took to the iGent community because I have an interest in menswear and clothing to a degree that most people in the real world around me find...unorthodox. I came here and found that there is a community out there who enjoys and cares about the aesthetic theory, creative process, and diligence it takes to build a solid wardrobe and present oneself in a dignified, stylish manner consistently. Many of these fellow iGents also happen to be well-educated, witty, and amicable in how they carry themselves, which makes me feel like I am spending my time in good company.

The internet is a medium that has only recently permeated our daily existence to a degree where it has nearly become part of our personalities. I come here as a retreat from my day-to-day and because I know I will have fun, while learning about a hobby I enjoy. What's the difference between me and the guy who is proud of wearing his new Ferragamo belt? The difference is that I want to know what makes that belt so good (or not so good), and why. If that makes me an iGent, so be it.

So you obviously haven had time to read much of the forum yet.

He's the Leo Strauss of the cloth fora.

His clothing demands an esoteric 'reading'.

I generally enjoy Guy’s writing, more than most around these parts. But I feel he pulled his punches a little here, maybe out of some camaraderie for the old days of SF. I was hoping for a thorough skewering and instead it was mostly heady nostalgia

but like, would it kill him to actually make a point?

I must find time to look one day for an amazing thread way back when Manton lost his nut over some remark and made all sorts of threats - - I think he alleged it insulted his 10 year old daughter -I'm not sure if he even had a 10 year old daughter.

Manton used to lose his shit a lot. For a guy who never served, he had a helluva hardon for the whole ‘respect the troops’ thing.

Hahahah absolutely spot on SVB!
As I was reading that I was wondering who is the audience? Who the fuck cares that a guy who is barely a household name working on the fringe of the Trump administration once wrote a book about menswear and used to be a regular poster on a menswear forum? This revelation is not exactly the fucking Pentagon Papers!
