Ivy - Where From Here?

Ivy style, Traditional American style, call it what you will, has been the reference point for mens style in American and Europe and various other countries like Japan for 50 odd years. Every time the designers need a breathing space they seem to come back to the basics of Ivy, natural shoulders, button down collars, loafers, the collegiate look. So where does this sit in today’s super casual world where putting on a shirt with buttons on it is dressing up and wearing a jacket, let alone a tie, puts you into such a bracket of stuffiness as to almost be divorced from normal society. In this world where does Ivy go from here, can it re-invent itself and be relevant?

You could find out what 'college kids' are wearing today, but that wouldn't be Ivy.

You could 'update' the classics to the silhouette of today, but that wouldn't be Ivy.

You could extract some principles and apply them to the clothing of today, and that could be Ivy.

I reckon the way to go is to carry on what you are doing. The 'ivy style' is in its nature essentially relaxed and casual, unlike a padded-shouldered, pleated waist look. Maybe suits and jackets can be reserved for times when a semblance of some formality, or simply a need to be a bit physically warmer is required. Actually, given the current state of the world, Ivy is an ideal style of dressing.

All this. Ivy is either there OG in your face or it has influenced others to uptake bits and pieces or the entire ethos. It does lend itself well to a more casual workplace. Ring Jacket is a darling because its jacket is a sack. Fast fashion is influenced and steals it outright. Uniqlo OCBDs and H&M Repp ties. Sweaters, chinos. chunks of RL. the failed BB Red Fleece.

I'm thinking a more bold colour scheme, the Izod art rock of 1978 a neon-techno-YMO imagined vision of Ivy and I guess that's being done in some of the ranges of RL. But certainly not J.Press and BB.

We'll see if the new owners can resurrect BB, but so far, don't see any improvement.

Was it that style and fashion left it behind, the demographic went over the event horizon, or did the Italians trash it through introducing hundreds of different sizes within fit ranges making buying online a high risk endeavour as it was impossible to suss out which fit size was right for you?
