For items that don't tend to be that different between departments, I don't get super hung up on whether something that could be unisex is from the men's or the women's department.

Over the years, Macys budget cashmere sweaters that go on sale every Black Friday have gotten thinner and thinner since I bought my first one 8 years ago. They had turtlenecks this year, and I wanted one, but I wanted the biggest size possible and/or the thickest knit possible.

So I decided to order one from each department to see which was the best: a Club Room cashmere turtleneck from the men's department, black, in a size XXL (the biggest available, they discontinued XXXL) and a Charter Club cashmere turtleneck from the women's department, heather grey (no black left), in a size 3X.

Based on the size chart, it looked like the Charter Club 3X (chest 50.5" to 52.5") would be bigger than the Club Room XXL (chest 48" to 50"). The Charter Club described the overall garment length as 27 1/4" long. The Club Room did not specify length.

Both say "Imported" but don't name the country. That is generally understood to mean China, according to friends of mine in the business.

Upon receiving, I found the Club Room to be the superior garment for my needs.

Armpit to armpit measurement on the Club Room XXL was about 26", on the Charter Club 3X was about 24" - this is the opposite of what I would have expected based on the size chart.

The feeling of the knit in each garment is slightly different. The Club Room seems to be a little thicker - not by much, but I compared them simultaneously in each hand, and then I switched hands, and both times the Charter Club garment seemed to feel a little thinner. It's possible this could be attributed to the colors being different, maybe heather grey comes off as thinner than black, I'm not sure, but it seems like the way the knit weave is programmed has more to do with it. I'm not an expert though!

The Club Room also seemed to be several inches longer than the Charter Club. The Charter Club length ended right at my belt line, the Club Room extends about 3 inches past my belt line.

I'll be returning the Charter Club. I had a suspicion that the garment made for the women's department might run smaller and have the thinner weave, but based on the size chart, conceded that my suspicion might be wrong. However, after comparing them side by side, I believe the Club Room garment is the nicer quality one.
